Ok I know that this has been talked about to death.
Just trying to understand how to read the ID numbers.
My jeep is registered as a model 1964.
    Vehicle # 57548-154115
    Eng. 4J335853
Ok model years start in Aug. right?
If I am reading the Vehicle number right it’s Oct. 1962. So that would be the end of the first quart of the 1963 Models, right? So is this a 1963 or is the vehicle registration right its a 1964? On the Reg. it says Model year not first year sold
Thanks for the Info. again :?

If I had a brand new 1962 Jeep sitting on the Jeep lot, and I didn't sell it till 1965, it's still a new 1962 Jeep, regardless of the year sold.
Yes you could have new model year 1963 Jeep built in late 1962, etc etc for all the years.
Typically, as I recall, the new models started to arrive at our dealership in late August or September.
When my family purchased the Jeep dealership in November of 1965, the 1966 V6 CJ's were already on the lot; my dad always said it was really hard to get rid of the 1965 F4-134 CJ models that were left over, as everybody wanted the new 225 V6.

You are correct, your jeep is manufactured as a model year 1963. If it was sold after August of 1964, the dealer was correct to allow it to be registered as a model year 1964 on the registration.

When the new model year switch over occurred, Jeep published information to the dealers as to when the model year switched over (date unit shipped from the factory), and what serial numbers could be "for registration purposes only" considered as the new model year. In some cases (from the info I have), this could go all the way back to January of 2 model years earlier. This is why it is commonly stated here that some Jeeps are registered with the model year in which they were sold rather than the model year in which they were built. Government rules must have been a little looser then.
