I am rebuilding a carb I found the intake check ball in my deep tank. My problem is i have the ball but not retainer. My rebuild instructions state the check ball is on some models only. did someone add the ball thing it needed to be there or did they loose the retainer. So how do I find out if I need the ball or not. I know it was not there before i double check just because it did not want something like this to happen.

Not sure how to answer your question.

You'd get better answers if you specify the year and engine type, and which carburetor it is. And the Early or Intermediate (depending on year) tech forum would be a better location for a question like this.

The 938 requires either a pump discharge check ball and weight or else a pump discharge check needle.
The retaining ring is intended to prevent one from losing those critical parts

The pump discharge check ball (116-25),
the pump discharge ball check weight (221-13)
and the pump discharge ball check retainer ring (63-152) are used with 938 S, 938 SA and 938 SC models.

938 SD models use a pump discharge check needle ( ) and retainer ring.
These components are critical to correct operation of the carburetor.

Looking at your profile, you have a 225V6 which normally has a Rochester 2g or 2gc. If this is the case then the inlet check ball (smaller one) is retained by the assist spring under the accelerator pump.
