Hello again everyone! Happy new year!

I have a question about my jeeps original paint color. I have been searching all morning and into the afternoon trying to get some information, also have looked plenty in the past on the subject, and still have a few questions.

Here are a few pictures of it.

If this source is correct, I have these to choose from

I found this old thread: http://www.earlycj5.net/forums/showthread.php?t=71752

But all the pictures don't work. I am guessing it's the Sierra blue color, but was that a Ren 1 color for 1970 like from that thread? Or was it an available color on any cj in 70? I can't find any information on it and my paint tag on the firewall was missing when I got it. Or is it a completely different color all together? Just would like to get some expert opinions as I'm starting body work and the idea of what to paint it is starting to find its way into my head. Even though I have a ways to go before that time comes :). The thought of painting it back original is very appealing, even though it's not a restoration.

Thanks in advance, I really appreciate all the help and replies from everyone here on the forums!

It's works, I have seen the top half of that image before but not the bottom. The color doesn't appear to be empire or island blue to me. Could it have been painted the light blue under the kenworth section???

There's no where else that you can see the original color? Like under the dash?

It's everywhere... Dash, firewall, all over the body... Not on the windshield.

Those first pictures were the best quality ones I had of the color

Thanks for posting those, I have seen the second one during my searches, it definitely can't be empire blue.. And island blue from the paintref website seems much different as well. It looks like that Sierra blue and when I started doing that research I couldn't find much. Just that thread where the 1970 Ren 1 was painted the Sierra blue. But none of the pictures worked and I can't find any on google. That thread made it out to seem that it's only a Ren 1 color in 1970.

My sept 1970 renegade I 999 color tag

Had an amc badge on the tailgate , and a jeep corporation vin tag.

Part of 1970 and all of 1971, was the..." HOLLY Toledo" days.

It seemed to be chaos , at the plants, with the buy out by amc.

Hmmmm... Well it has a kaiser corp vin tag. Willys stamped on tailgate I that matters (prob not)... But I agree, it seems it was very chaotic! Mine has a rear tank filler cutout with no rear tank..

But anyways, if you think it could be that blue I will look into it. I also like the bayshore blue metallic at the bottom. If jeeps were painted with the colors from that, I'm sure I could pick one. I like a couple of them and would be very happy if I could paint it an original color.., idk why since it's not a restoration but I feel like I want to.

Hell I have no clue :)

I was just tossing this in the mix, to just confuse it all even more :) my dash stick was a kaiser LOL

I was just thinking it was the renegade I/II blue. Because alot of the Renegade colors where the big bad theme.

Here is a good one to look at http://collectorcarpricetracker.com/auctions/detail/190359157867/

Here's another paint chart. This one is from 1972, but it may show the sierra blue a little better. Scanned images shown on non-calibrated monitors are dificult to show colors accurately. Jeep paint code 222 is Ditzler 12077 which is shown on the following chart:

Wow. Great info! I was hesitant about posting this because of how much paint colors have been discussed but I'm glad I did. Thank you!

It's def btw Sierra blue or big bad blue. If my sources are correct, Sierra blue was not a 70 color? So it could likely be big bad blue. But I don't have a renegade JEEP, do I? That would probably change some things... Or was it a color offered on any cj that year...

    Choosing/finding the paint color sux.

As much info that I can find makes me feel better about paint choice.

Redoing door jams fire walls, and inside trunks , sux to redo :)

That is also why I am falling, in love with the vinyl wraps.

So I say to all, when it comes to paint .....ASK away, You can never know to much about paint :)

It's great stuff to learn about. I had the sticker above the battery which told me the color, trim, etc. while having it blasted, there was no such color anywhere... My onion skin of colors were the PO midnight blue poly, navy or hiway yellow, and white. Nothing indicating otherwise in the hard to find or hidden spaces. I'll be putting it back to stock as spruce tip green poly per the trim sticker.

Do you know the VIN of your Jeep? We have a VIN document that should help to narrow the year of production.

If you want, you can take a section of the body to the paint store and they can match your paint color. Or you can have sample spray cans made of the candidate color and try spraying them next to a patch of remaining paint on the body.

You can buy the AMC colors if you want, but Jeeps would not have been delivered in them, unless the color pallets overlapped. Jeep had its own color pallet. Note that fleet colors were also available, such as Marlin Blue Poly, Federal Gray, Black, White, Omaha Orange, Transport Yellow, etc.

If it were mine, I would be happy just to make it all one color. I would look for a pre-mixed color from TCP Global or Kirker that was close to the original and preserved the spirit of the original color. You are going to do an all-over respray anyway, so matching the original color should not be an issue.

Auto Body Toolmart will send you a very nice Kirker color sample sheet for free - http://www.autobodytoolmart.com/kirker-paint-sample-color-chips-p-12659.aspx - the Kirker paints are very popular with the hot rod builders... real auto body paint of good quality but a limited number of colors.

Smart Shoppers has some of the colors online here - http://www.smartshoppersinc.com/colorchart.html - color accuracy of monitors is not great though.

The VIN is 364665, you helped me find out pretty much everything to do with my jeep a few months back. We originally thought it was 865 from the frame stamp.. But I found the vin plate recently under paint and it was 665.

I don't know if I would want to paint it the bright blue it was, just was curious If the blue had a significant meaning like a renegade color, it would be nice to know if it was a renegade 1. I was leaning more towards a darks silver, but that shadetree blue metallic was very nice from the color sheet. Going to seriously look into that. Then again my mind has not been made up yet and I am very open minded. I will look into those links though. Thanks for the link, I'll get to looking!
