I just finished rebuilding my carb this afternoon; the pre-built idle jet was mostly plugged, and there was a real bad bog when I opened up the throttle hard. Pre-build idle vacuum, measured off the line that used to run the wipers, was a dismal 6 lbs, and dropped down to 0 at full throttle.

So i got the carb rebuilt, put it on, and it runs a lot better. It idles well, there's only a slight bog when I mash the throttle--but my vacuum reading only went up to 7 at idle.

I guess my question is, should i be taking vac readings elsewhere? It runs god, so I'm surprised that I would have that much of a vacuum leak.

That line runs from the intake, right? If I should be measuring vacuum elsewhere, where?

Are you measuring ported vacuum instead of manifold vacuum? Ported vacuum on the carburetor is blocked off by the throttle plate, and drops to near zero at idle. Manifold vacuum typically comes from a fitting on the intake manifold.

    I'm measuring manifold, I think.

Is it disconnected from the vacuum pump and/or PCV system?

I would use the plug or fitting on the right-hand side of the head just under the carb base, with any other accessory lines removed and plugged during the test.

Are you using psi measurement units? If so 6 lbs equates to 17+ inches of Hg which most of us would consider very good. That it goes to zero or something close to it at WOT is normal.
