I have a 1972 CJ5 that has OEM paint that I don't see as an option for 1972. Unfortunately I don't have the paint code id tag. The strange thing is that I have seen other 1972 CJ5s that are the exact same color. It is an orange that definitely doesn't look like Renegade Orange. Here is a link to some pics of the jeep I saw online that is the same color. Anybody have any clues?

Could be Omaha Orange (code 135). This is a common fleet color. The fleet colors were available alongside the regular colors, but they did not appear in the brochures. White, black, Transport Yellow, Omaha Orange, GSA Gray, among others, were always available on the order sheet.

However, I think the Jeep in your picture is not Omaha Orange, but Butterscotch Gold (code 490). IMO those pictures are a poor rendering of that color. In real life, that color is more like the familiar butterscotch hard candies. It's an attractive color, but had a short run - maybe only 1972. Omaha Orange is really orange - it's the color that orange commercial equipment is painted. If you were in California, I'd tell you to look at a CalTrans truck, but I don't have a good example for NH.

The color chip for butterscotch gold must not be even close to accurate. That CJ-6 does look very much like the original color of my cj-5. I wonder why the color chip is so far off.

Scanners and digital cameras will change the appearance of most colors. And your monitor will add its own character to colors. So it's hard to judge from on-line resources. Even if the color chips were accurate in life, they will be changed by the time they get to your screen.

When you see a Jeep painted Butterscotch Gold, it's very recognizable. It's not orange, it's butterscotch.
