King pin races

Is there any measurement to check on a Dana 27 king pin race or just the obvious (scratches)?

 

None that I know of.. Are they loose, or are you just in there for preventative maintenance?

 

Not an expert on this topic - however :smash:

I would think you need 1) usual visual inspection of the bearings and cups, for ribbing, grooves, blue spots, cracks, etc. They should feel smooth when you turn them, have no junk embedded in the rollers or cups - and 2) you must be able to acheive the proper preload. If you remove all the shims and the preload is too loose, then I would expect the bearings to be worn out.

 

Because you are not getting full revolutions on the bearing groves will develop grooves where the rollers ride on the race.

 

One point of a tapered cup is to take up wear by adjusting. So no, I doubt there is a measurement.

Ditto on the grooves. That does happen in king pins bearings and will make adjustment impossible. Also a source of death wobble.
