I know this has been asked before, but I don't remember the exact answer. I've been looking for a smaller wheel for my 75 CJ and came across this for $25. It's out of an 87 Cherokee.

I know I read somewhere about retrofitting a cherokee lower steering shaft to a CJ (and I have a lower shaft in the garage), but does anyone think it would be less than a major mod to retrofit this?

I pulled a cj7 tilt column with pedals and brackets a while ago and plan to swap it into my '74, at some point. Seems like the angle will be a little different, and the lower shaft will need to be shortened, but not a huge deal.
In the mean time, I had a machine shop plane the back of a YJ wheel and match it to a Grant adapter hub. It works great, and only cost me around $40. If you only want a smaller wheel, I recommend this option.

If you want to change the whole column to incorporate a column directional and ignition switch, I would definitely look for a CJ tilt column. They make getting in and out of your rig a lot easier, and allow for any steering angle, which may be a big deal depending on your seats and seat height.
