Just found this site and looks like there are some knowledgeable members here that I hope can help me. I bought a 73 CJ5 last year and the PO rebuilt it in 06. He installed a chevy 4.3ltr motor that I am currently in the process of replacing with a SBC 350 crate motor. While I have everything out I want to replace as much as I can so I don't have to do it again later. One of my problems is that The build list the PO gave me says he installed a T-98A transmission and I want to replace seals. Looking at the tag and case numbers I think that it may be a T-18 and not a T-98A. I know that they are similar except for lower gears in the T-98, my question is are the gaskets the same? I have a small seeping problem with the bell housing/ transmission connection. not really leaking but I want to replace it before it does. I pulled the motor but not the tranny yet but I think the top plate may have a t-98 cast which may have led the PO to believe it is a T-98. Tranny coming out tomorrow. any ID help with the attached pics would help. Any other pics or info you might need to ID? Not sure how to get the pics larger but clicking on the tag img pic will get you to my photobucket site for all the pics that you cane enlarge.. Thanks.

The crate motor going in. using the excavator to lift it out of the El Camino (also used it to move it from the delivery semi to the El Camino). My buddies shop where we are doing the work in since he has a lift and all the tools. he is a retired Cert. GM tech.

Is the tag number 5358286 ?

If so, the tag would indicate trans is from 1979 model year: J-10, J-20 truck, with V8 engine.
The side case ID does not.
    tags can be moved.

Yes it is 5358286 and the other # is 13-01-193. The side case# is 13-01-065-906.

JP I think you are on to something. A little more google work and it seems that the other numbers may indicate the tranny to be a 79 CJ T-18A (or close facsimile). I also googled shift patterns and found that the T-98 rev shifts to the left and up by 1st gear, Early T-18's rev shifts to the right and up by 3rd gear, and the 77-79 T-18A reverse shifts to the right and down by 4th gear like my tranny does. the later t-18A's were also wide-ratio so 1st gear is 6.32:1. The only way to know for sure is to open the top tomorrow and start counting teeth, along with which gears are beveled or spur. if it is a t-18 then I am going to call Novak and order their Twin stick D20 conversion along with the gaskets.
