    I don't disagree.
But muriatic is also known as "tinner's flux" and used to prepare radiators etc for soldering. Also for cleaning masonry. I find it very useful for getting good solder patches, but have not flushed tanks with it.

    My $.02

You can find complaints on the net on just about any tank sealer that's out there.

And you can find rave reviews about how it's worked flawlessly on the net on just about any tank sealer that's out there.

*Some* sealers seem to have issues with etanol.

*Some* sealers seem prone to problems if the proper preparation work isn't done per the instructions.

*Some* seem to have problems with ethanol *if* the proper instructions weren't followed.

Now, personally, I ued POR15 on my tank 5 years ago & it's worked perfectly without a single problem. Of course, the tanks's been sitting on a shelf with no gas in it the whole time.

My point? No point really, I just like driving my post count up :)

But if I had a point I guess it would be-

If you use a sealer- FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS TO THE LETTER.

Another comment - excuse me if it's obvious - zinc and tin are different metals. The plating on gas tanks is 'galvanized' which means zinc. This is the same plating that you find on galvy nails. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galvanization The zinc serves as a sacrificial anode for corrosion, and provides corrosion protection even when the underlying steel is exposed.

You put HCl on tin, tin plate or steel, and it etches the surface. You put HCl on zinc and it dissolves the metal. The rate of reaction is very different.

    Different materials warrant different approaches.

Having it hot-tanked at a radiator shop was my first thought. And I'd probably use Kreem motorcycle tank sealer, but that stuff's evil - be sure to use it outdoors with a good breeze and no sparks or flames nearby!
