my 1979 cj6 has now a 4.2l with a t150/d20 and next week my in fl. bought cj5 is here in austria.
i plan to put from the 1977 cj5 the 304/t18a/d20 combo in my cj6.
    will i have problems?
are both combos the same lenght?
can i use the the transmissionskidplate?

i dont want to hassle with the driveshafts so i want the d20 where it is now.

No, they are not the same length. The T-18 is longer than the T-150.

I understand your thinking, but I believe you will be much much much better off to put the engine and transmission in the factory location, and adjust the lengths of the drive shafts. The 3-speed and 4-speed applications use different drive shafts. You can use the front drive shaft from the CJ-5, and have your CJ-6 drive shaft shortened. Otherwise, it should all bolt in. Use whatever you need from the CJ-5 - clutch linkage, transmission mount, speedometer cable, radiator, frame towers, etc etc.

Transmission cross member is the same for both vehicles.

Should be easy, if you change enough parts.

Also, a '77 V8 uses the Prestolite ignition system. You would be wise to convert the engine to Motorcraft ignition, as used in the '79 V8s. This will be more compatible with the CJ-6 wiring, and be more durable and much more reliable than the Prestolite junk.

I have a AMC 360/T150/D20 combo in my CJ6. It's great, a real head turner and plenty of power to get in trouble.
