jpc, that's exactly what I was going to toss into the mix here... a set of Jack O'Brien's gears, or even an Atlas tcase to achieve the desired low crawl without going super low in the diffs.

Thought the original question was to use a 73 frame to gain length to add room for more gearing?
Why not a cj6? It is my understanding that rock crawlers were looking for more like 100 inch wheel base.
    Scramblers being the most desirable.

rockeaters? i am going there now, thanx!

do they work with the od?
i could always leave higher street gears in it and then gear WAY down with these.. lemme check em out and do some number crunchin.

OD works fine. the gears fit in the Dana18/20 wide hole and do not disturb any other pieces.
tell Jack where you heard of them, and be prepared, he will talk your head off.
3.6:1 gears with OD gear and Dana18 rebuild kit cost ~$2200.

i can buy a new d18 from herm with tera low for like 1100. then throw the OD on the back.
i think i will do that and stick to the 4.27's. 94:1 seem low enough.

the original question was about using the 72 frame and adding a np203 or the klune V david 4:1 in front of the d18. compound down.
the david is 6 1/2" long according to the email i received. since the 72 was stretched 5.5" to accomodate the i6, i figures we could put the v6 in, have the same power (close) and take up the space with the sm420/klune/d18. it would only be +1 inch from the trans, and +6 from the klune which might put the v6 in the middle of the dog house. my tranny lever would be forward, but i could heat the shifter and bend it backwards.
the d18 stays in the same place so no cutting the drive shafts, no moving the rear axle back ofr a better shaft angle, i can run an OD for street driving, or gear down to 4.27/7.05/2.46 (with stock d18 74:1) or drop down to 4:1 with the david (or if crap gets scary, double low to around 300:1. or anywhere in between). the goliath is 2.7 low, and thats for high performance which i dont need.
but all that should tuck up under a 72+ jeep. all my suspension should bolt up and my d44 passenger should bolt right up and use the d18 instead of the d20.

that was the whole concept of the original post, but we quickly derailed it on the turbo, then crawl ratios (which i learned a lot).
but, for a d18 rebuild, it wouldnt be much. $2200 would get me the 4:1 david with all adapters and stuff, all i would need would be the OD unit hanging off the back and its a sleeper 72, with a turbo v6 (hiding), klune V (hiding), stock looking d18 and offset d44. the holbrook long leaves i have wouldnt be showing until i need to crawl, the longer frame would help me from rolling over. and it would be rolling on 33"s.
it would look basic, until closer inspection. then the DAMN factor kicks in. especially when my stock looking jeep is a daily with disk brakes, power steering, good gear setup, plenty of passing power if needed and good gas mileage. i would have to be easy on the turns due to soft springs or put a disconnect sway bar on it.
street jeep until the dirt then unleash a beast incognito.

so, since we were brought back to the OP, whats the difference between the jeeps? are the tubs and windshield the same? can i put a soft top from a 68 on a 72?
i know hood and fenders are longer, but can i use my grill and longer bars and not even have a hood or fenders?
i know i would have to cut and move the motor mounts once i got the back half positioned.
i could save the money on the tera gears and just do a stock rebuild. i would have descent crawl ratio (stock low), killer crawl ratio (david 4:1) or rediculas crawl ratio (both in low). super flex springs, fuel injection, turbo..just a bunch of kewl items. it would go places with the ECTED i plan on putting in. (as long as i dont break an axle on the trail, i should be able to drive it there and home..) =)
