    For your consideration.

an adapter for the frame mounted trailer hitch that either extends the hitch or takes its place that has a 3 foot upright and you mount your tire carrier plate to that. Takes the weight off of the body and tailgate. If you need to use the tailgate, simply pull the hitchpin and slip the mount out of the hitch reciever, use the tailgate and replace the mount and pin.

That is a neat idea. I like the way it works. And you could fab up something that used a wedge or of device and a bolt that would tighten it into the hitch so it removed any play and did not rock. Quick install and quick uninstall. Only issue is it takes your ability to tow away.

Not if you picked up one that was also an extender. You know slip the tire carrier into the receiver on the Jeep, then the trailer hitch into the receiver in the carrier.

How about this for a update haha! I figured out a way to mount the rear tire on the back without and heavy modification I used a M38 tail gate.

Nice ideas from that company. Also nice to see USA made stuff, we need more innovation and production of useful well-made durable goods in this country!fb

That looks just fine and I'll bet it was the cheapest and easiest option too!;)

I had a Warn brand swing away spare tire carrier on my Jeep but I finally took it off because it rattled so much I was afraid it would eventually tear the Jeep apart offroad. It mounted on the bumper/frame, but all the weight was outboard of the back of the Jeep. So, for now, I'm back to laying the spare in the bed. But that takes up the entire bed space. I don't have or want a back seat, so it's not that big a deal, but I do like to carry and store stuff back there. Here's the solution I've come up with, when I actually get around to doing it. I did a quick sketch to help explain it:

As you can see, it's just a piece of 3/4 ply on top of the wheel wells that the spare will sit on and be bolted through. The box underneat can be configured any number of ways--one big, open box; half of it open and the other half consisting of 2 or 3 stacked drawers on their own glides; big box w/shallow, sliding tray on top, etc., etc...

It can also be locked simply by putting a padlock through the tailgate keeper...and all the weight is over the rear axle. It doesn't rain enough here to worry about making it weathertight, but it wouldn't be hard to seal the sides and raise the plywood deck enough to be able to install a rubber flap that goes over the rail of the tailgate to shed water away...

I hacked this thing together real quickly a while back.

It's an armrest/cup holder that fits an Igloo Ice Cube. I put ice and water in it about half-full and put some water bottles in there and they stay freezing cold for a long time! I'll probably screw this to the front of the box frame shown above.
