Friend of mine just bought a pretty stock '73 CJ 5 He took it thru our State Inspection it failed emissions no problem I adjusted the carb all is well. They are telling him the tail lights are not for that year Jeep that they should be like the later model CJ's. I'll try to get a pic but he has 2 back up lights above 2 round tail lights which I believe are stock mounted below the back up lights. If any one has any sales literature showing this set up I know he would appreciate it. Thanks

Thanks Tim I agree with you and I thought for sure they were original seems like they feel as if they were supposed to be like the newer ones with the side marker light in them some of these inspectors get on a high horse and until you can prove other wise they are little hard.

I was asked, by a mechanic, about the side marker lights on later ECJ5s and intermediates, in regards to pass/fail of state inspection. The JeeP in question had aftermarket, recessed tail lights and, the side marker lights had been covered over by with sheet metal, resulting, effectively, in no rear side marker lighting. Mechanic failed it. Don't know what happened from there. Point is, most mechanics want to see some sort of side marker if the jeep had them from factory.

The side markers were added in 1969 when they passed a new federal law requiring them.

After talking to the DMV they are ok with the tail lights he has to add rear marker lights or reflectors to the corners. Problem solved 2 stick on reflectors. Thanks
