What are all these wires on my alternator? Also where to connect choke wire?

Can you tell me what this wire is for? Previous owner cut it.

And what is this box connected to the alternator is for?

Also where did you connected the electric choke wire to the alternator?

    Thank you!

    Year/model? Looks like a '72 or '73.

    Voltage regulator.

Did you Jeep have an electric choke from the factory? Most this era did not.

Do you have a copy of the Jeep Factory Manual? It would help you a lot. I can't help you more unless I know the year.

73 CJ5. It has a Weber 32/36 carburetor with electric choke no connected (everything installed by previews owner)

    Thanks!

I have a '72 manual, and it shows two gray wires coming the cluster "H" terminal (charge light) to the exciter terminal (on the alternator) and then to the regulator. I suspect this is what you are looking at, but I can't tell from here whether it's the wire from the dash or wire to the regulator that's been cut.

You really need to get the factory manual for your year of Jeep. They are available for purchase online. There is a '74 manual at www.oljeep.com, but the copy quality is not good enough to read the wiring diagram.

Here's an example of the manual you need - http://thejeep.com/shop/TECH+MANUAL....html?osCsid=8011c642c3a27013e706794837cc1559 - available from many sellers.

Re the electric choke, I'm running mine from the (+) side of the ignition coil - this is connected directly to the "on" position of the ignition switch. You may want to add a relay to take the load off of the ignition switch, and feed the relay from the battery side of the starter solenoid.

I would ratchet that "May want to" up to "should".

I have seen many examples in years gone by where people have pulled power off the coil, and later gone nuts when the engine later developed running problems that were eventually traced back to the ignition.

Many key switches have a contact dedicated to running things other than the ignition when in the "On" position and this is a good choice if you ever need to change out the key switch. This way, you do not need the relay.

The alternator looks to be a Prestolite [OEM]. I would replace it with a newer style alternator, CS series, w/internal voltage regulation. I am bettin that if or when you get that alt under water, or wet your motor is gonna die. Ask me how I know.

If your charge system is working good and keeping the battery charged then that clipped wire goes to the alt/gen/chg indicator light on the speedo face.

That's my thinking as well. C6 in this diagram: http://oljeep.com/gw/74_tsm/22-7-CJWiringDiagram.pdf
