Another D44 axle shaft endplay question

I am combining parts from 3 different Dana 44 19 spline axles. I just had a shop put in a powr-lok. When I put the axle shafts in and tighten down the bearing retainer I end up with 1/32 of freeplay on one side and 3/32 on the other with no shims on either side. I know the button spacers are in the differential since I had to pull it to look at the spline alignment. At this point my options seem to be:
1) make thicker button spacers
2) turn down the bearing retainer to push the race slightly farther into the housing.
3) try different axle shafts, perhaps there are some variations in length. I do I have a couple spares.
Has anyone run into this? There was a similar issue but on another post but it was traced down to missing spacers.
