Can someone confirm for me how the spring/retainer should be placed inside the lower steering coupling? This diagram - http://thejeep.com/shop/HARD+PARTS/STEERING/Arms-Shafts-Wheels/STEERING+WHEELS+%252526+COLUMN+PARTS/5450034/Lower+Steering+Column+Boot+1972-1975+Jeep+CJ5+CJ6+.html?osCsid=81f3d673ccfb4e151697e2dd9a3f0cbe - shows it being put in from the side. I couldn't get it on that way.

The Assembly section under the Steering U-Joint Coupling heading in the 74 TSM reads "4) place retainer over end of shaft". The TSM diagram of the steering column includes the coupling, but the coupling is not "blown up" to show the insides (pages 11-2 through 11-4 for those of you keeping score at home). This is how I put it on.

I am concerned that with the spring/retainer placed over the end of the shaft it might slip off if there is any movement in the shaft.

    Thanks in advance.

The blocks go on the studs on the shaft, and the spring's tension pushes the blocks against the wall of the bell coupler.

Thanks, Old Blue. I got that part. The spring also has ridges that slide along side the blocks keeping it in place relative to the blocks. I placed the spring in proper alignment with the blocks. But what I can't figure out is if the spring should go on from the side of the shaft so that the ridges are perpendicular to the shaft? Or if it should go on over the end of the shaft which means the ridge are parallel to the shaft? I put it on over the end of the shaft, but wonder if it was designed to go in from the side of the shaft so that the back of the spring is in contact with the side of the coupler, thereby ensuring tension on the spring so as to push the blocks against the wall of the coupler. I am also concerned that the spring might slip off the end of the shaft if there is movement.

81-86 shown the same way, but that could be just for illustration purposes.

It's been a while since I installed mine but I remember it was from the side. The original I pulled out was the same.
