Dana 27 Disc conversion question

I searched this topic but did not find anything. I am doing a disc conversion on my Dana 27. I got the kit from www.kaiserwillys.com . I removed enough material on the hubs so that the calipers do not touch. Question is, do I need a backing plate behind the new disc mounting brackets? I have seen a lot of photos with backing plates and some without? Any insight? Photo links below.

backing plate? do you mean dust shield, the thing that is behind the rotors on factory disk brake cars that covers the rotor?

Ah yes! Thanks, that was what I was talking about. Sorry, wasn't sure of the terminology.
