Removing brake drums, but there 3 screws?

My brakes are frozen on my 3B so i went to pull the drums today and sand them down and adjust the shoes but there are 3 screws on the drum and now i'm stumped, never seen anything like this before, how do i get these drums off? these are my fronts if it makes a difference, here are some pics

 

They dont wanna come out.... i think its time to break out the drill......

so adapt a screw head to a impact gun and try to turn them off?

 

GET AN IMPACT DRIVER. I've taken out a great many stuck screws out with one. They will come out. BE PATIENT AND GET THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE JOB.

Those screws are important for 9" brakes. They keep the drum centered since the brake shoes are more fixed than modern drums like the later CJs used. If the drum is off center, you will have less stopping power. This is my understanding of their purpose. Put never-sieze on them when you reinstall them.

 

I thought the original purpose was so they could be shipped sans wheels and not have the drums fall off! Maybe that's why my 9" brakes always sucked so bad? I love this site, learn something every day! Geoffrey, I used a hand impact screwdriver to take them off. Basically you bang the tool with a hammer and it pops and rotates. Really handy to have!

I believe harbor freight has these. Very inexpensive, and REALLY handy when you need it!

 

i think i use mine most at the junk yard when undoing windshield hinge screws and latches . and door strikes on the willys trucks

 

Take the hub off with the drum. No need to remove the drum from the hub. Take the locking hub off, and remove the two spindle nuts. The drum and hub comes off. Inspect your shoes, repack the wheel bearings, replace the grease seal and put it back. This is the right approach - don't remove the drums from the hubs until you have to.

 

well i got the screws off, but how do i pull just the drum now? i tryed prying on it and tapping it with a hammer but no dice. all suggestions appreciated

 

You are just making more work for yourself by trying to get the drums off without the hub. Just remove the hub and the drum together. If you need to replace the drum, you can separate the hub from the drum when it's off the vehicle.

 

I believe you said the drums are frozen, I assume that the drums/hubs won't turn, correct? If so the shoes are likely seized on the drums.

Make sure the adjuster is turned in so that the shoes can release the drum, then take a hammer and tap the drum until the shoes release, It may take a while but get the hubs and drums turning and then maybe they will come off.

I have had to use a "hot wrench" aka torch on Ford Model A drums to heat them up to get the shoes to release, but didn't plan on using the drums, so not worried about warping, be careful if you do this, just warm the up and then you may ruin them any way. Good luck.

Take your time, they will come off.

 

i feel kinda stupid asking this, but i couldnt find the hole for the adjuster, can someone explain to me where it is. Thanks, i'm not sure if i want to replace them yet, i havnt seen the cost of new ones..

 

Back side of the backing plate near the bottom. An oblong hole may have a plug in it. Anyways that is how the 67 are set up. Put a screw driver in the hole and lever the star wheel.

 

9" brakes do not have the adjustment hole like the 10, and 11" do

 

how do i adjust the brakes then?
