I'm looking to buy this jeep. It has an F-head with a solex carb. It seems to run really well. The trouble of course is that there is a hole in the hood where the carb and air horn stick out. Now this Solex has an adapter/riser tube that is 2+" long between the carb body and the intake manifold.

My question is, is this riser/adapter tube necessary? Could you make the carb fit without the adapter? Would it just be best to go with a Holley 1904 from a Ford Falcon, if I can fine one?

It is unlikely that a 3A L-head can be found within a reasonable distance. Unfortunately the 3A L-head is unique to the 3A due to the motor mount position.

It is just the front engine plate that is special about the 3A ......and you can use a M38 one also. Might even be able to use the plate from the F head too, check it out. You have to pull the front pulley, timing cover and cam gear to change it.

The Falcon carb seems to be pretty easy to find, Might want to check some of the online places.

Can't help ya on the Solex....are you sure it is just a spacer you are talking about, not the throttle body?

I've done a little searching and found this link that Garage Gnome posted on another thread.

    http://www.film.queensu.ca/cj3b/Tech/LowHoodFHead.html

In the article the Solex spacer removal is mentioned, along with the Falcon carb. Neither seems a perfect solution. Apparently there is a Carter side draft that will work.

It's a nice jeep, but that hole in the hood and the air horn sticking out.... It's so high that the windshield won't lay flat...

Fought that for years, the side draft was the only 'real' thing to keep folks from cutting up good hoods.

Like Tim says - that's why I run a V6 in all my flatties.

This already has a really nice running F-head installed. Wish he still had the L-head, I'd rebuild and install it and keep the F for the CJ-5

Now, I met a fellow who has a 56 or 57 GM V-8. It was in a CJ-2a. I suppose that would require steering mods etc to install..

What did you use as an intake manifold connection for the side draft?

It's been too many years, I believe one setup worked right off the intake, the other needed some mods. Ford Falcon sticks in my head, but Dad and Mr C are both gone now, and I don't have another old timer who remembers.

Sorry, we went to V6s in the late 70s and never looked back.

    Thanks Chuck,

I've seen the side draft off a turbo Corvair mentioned, there is even a picture on the link that Garage Gnome posted, but no details. The ford falcon carb, a Holley 1904, seems the best way to go, but even that requires a clearance dent in the valve cover and a flattened air horn. A V-6 would be nice, but I don't have one of those either! I'll keep kicking this around, and maybe a 3A with the L head will turn up, or someone else will buy this one...
