    Does anybody know if the metallic paints from the factory were single stage or bc/cc? Also, can somebody fill me in on what 'poly' means, following some of the color names on the code sheets?

    Single stage, likely acrylic enamel.

    Poly == metallic.

    Yea, I don't think bc/cc came about until, maybe, the late 70's at the earliest. Maybe not until the early 80's. Doesn't mean you couldn't use it on an older vehicle. Much nicer to work with than any single stage, from what I have witnessed.

    Certainly it's easier to shoot metallic in base coat than in single stage (SS). With base coat, you shoot just enough to cover the panel. No runs, even coverage.

    With SS metallic, you need more technique. You need to apply enough paint so that the surface is wetted, but not enough to make runs. If you are not consistent, the metallic sheen will look different from panel to panel. And runs change the color, and can't be rubbed out.

    But if you want a solid color, I don't see any advantage to BC/CC over a SS product. SS will be easier. My VW is BC/CC Schwartz, and I painted the deck lid to match with BC/CC. But I should have gone SS.

    The SS paints are just messier in a booth. The paint sticks to air hoses, and everything else, worse than bc/cc seems to. Made a mess out of the paint area when we painted my truck last spring.
