How much should a 71- 72 commando sell for?

Found a bone stock commando for a buddy which was in a barn for 20 years and was all original with 32000 miles on it and the 304 . Has 2 small digs in the body . He bought for his daughter and she did'nt like it. I know it since has had a auto trans put in and I think disc brakes. Don't have any pics from him as yet but am trying. The rig is very nice

I paid $1000 for my 73 with 304. Turbo-hydro 400 and the original (never had been removed) metal hardtop. I bought it sight unseen off Craigslist because I new it'd be gone by the time I could get there. I bought it from the original owner who said it sat in his back yard for 3 years. He aired up the tires, put in a junk battery, put some gas in and I drove it home 75 miles away. I wouldn't sell it for $3000 (yeah, I know I probably couldn't even if I would, but I wouldn't).

Find out actually what it is. A 72 will have better drivetrain, but will not have disks, they came around 76.
A good running Commando, easily offer a grand.
I just sold one for 1K that is going from VA to CA. for parts.

 

73 was last year for commando.

Yes - a Commando with a 304 will have to be a '72 or '73, unless it was swapped in - very unlikely. Both '71 and '72 came with an optional automatic, so it could have come that way.

I like them, but many consider the bullnose Commando built in '72-73 as ugly. I used to drive the dealership's yellow '72 Commando convertible around, when it was pressed into use as a parts runner. Normally the boss's wife drove it. Rode and drove nice, but at the time seemed a little foo-foo for a Jeep.

If it's a real barn find, and in good shape, it's worth a few thousand at least. The full hard top is the least desirable and most common body style. They also made a roadster, with a fold-down top, like you'd have on a CJ. The half cab is very scarce, and the true convertibles are collectible.

(First year for optional front disks in a CJ was 1977 - the Commando was long gone by then. The Wagoneers and J-trucks got them in 1974.)

The convertible and roadster have fabric tops. The removable hard top is steel. Both the half-cab and full top tend to stay on all the time, because they are heavy and you have to store them somewhere.

The difference between the roadster and the convertible is more subtle.
