Dauntless V6 Flywheel

I have a 71 CJ5 with a dauntless V6. Does anyone know where I can buy a new flywheel for the duantless V6? The transmission shop that replaced my clutch says that my flywheel is too worn for the clutch to hold. I can't find a flywheel listed at any of the usual chain auto parts stores.

As others have said, you should be able to have it resurfaced for less than $40. So did he go ahead and put the clutch in then?

The transmission shop tells me that it was resurfaced, but now that they have installed the clutch, they cannot get it properly adjusted. They say that it slips after shifting to second gear and accelerating. They attribute the problem to a worn out flywheel. I don't know anything about flywheels, but this seems odd, because I believe that my Jeep only has about 70K original miles. Some frinds of mine have suggested that they may have the wrong throw out bearing installed, or perhaps the clutch fork may be bent. Could the throw out bearing or clutch fork be the problem?? I'm going to speak to the shop again this morning.

That doesn't sound right. Unless the flywheel has serious heat spots or cracking, it shoud be fine with a good resurfacing job.

doesn't the clutch assembly bolt directly to the flywheel? If so then there should be no problem with surface contact and as long as the flywheel is thick enough not to warp under heat it should work

If you cannot achieve pedal free-play then you most likely have the wrong TO bearing, improperly installed. This causes clutch slip. I just can't imagine the 225 flywheel not having enough metal when re-surfaced, to hold the clutch?

The pressure plate sits on the same plane as the friction disc. If it's flat, the clutch will not slip. Did they resurface the flywheel?

They are blowing smoke up your kazoo. A worn flywheel will move the clutch and pressure plate away from the tranny resulting in difficulty getting the disc to completely release, not a slipping issue. The real problem can be several issues. The flywheel face may not have been clean or severely glazed. They may have used a pressure plate that was shipped with a preservative that they failed to remove/clean off. They may have installed incorrect parts. As mentioned above do you have a 1/2" to 1" pedal free play?

Ya - have to call BS on that. If the PPlate will torque to spec (which should be checked more than anything) the holes are fine. If the FW was resurfaced (I always do mine on a swap - cheap insurance) it should mate up fine.

There are two different TO bearings used depending on the PP. The three finger plate uses the shorter of the two. Sounds like you have a three finger plate with the taller TO bearing.

I didn't chime in due to distance and the posted problem didnt make sense. Sounds like its time to find a shop that knows something about older cars.
And for the record I only have 11 of them on the shelf...

did they use a new pressure plate or just the disk? iv seen many a pressure plate loose their spring. theyd have to take quite alot of meat off the flywheel for it to be worn beond use

Not the flywheel even with hot spots it will not slip. Have to agree with the other post wrong pressure plate/ bearing combo. This happens all the time on older VW bugs due to trans changes etc. People would place the wrong pressure plate bearing combo and it would slip like crazy. Had plenty towed in from other shops
    when I had a shop.

Thanks to all of you for your valuable input. I addressed all the issues that you all have mentioned with the shop. The flywheel replacement is on hold, and they are going hack in to reassess. I post the results.

There are two different to bearings for the Jeep application but actually 3 different GM to bearings. I've received all 3 at different times and have been wrong for my application. Just food for thought...
