    I have a 1970 CJ5, it has the factory front axle - dana 30.

I purchased the skyjacker 2.5 leafspring kit and skyjacker hyrda 7000 shocks.

I'm trying to mount the shock and there is no way it will mount. there is a bolt in the way located on the axle on both passenger side and driver side?

What are my options? What is this bolt and can it be removed?

    That's a Dana 25 or 27, not a 30. 30 is open knuckle in a CJ.
That bolt is the steering stop and needs to be there. Keeps the knuckles from turning too far causing damage.
What is different from what was on there before? Can you mount the shocks so the shaft is down to clear?

the shock should mount to the stud on the spring plate, the one sticking out just below the steering stop you circled.

If you staart the bolt in the lower mount, and rotate the shock while pushing it on, it will work. I put a set of rough country's on my 68 and with a little finess, they will go on. Picture is alittle fuzzy, but it fit with no grinding.[IMG][/IMG]

I used to mount my shocks upside down, as Nick suggested. No hassles.

The older shocks were smaller diameter. Also my mistake on stating the wrong axle, this is my first jeep and i still have a lot to learn about them

thats where i'm trying to mount it but that bolt is in the way,

I will try this as my last resort, thanks for the info

Thanks I will retry using your method

If i have no luck I will give that a shot, thanks for the suggestion

This is interesting. Apparently on the model 27 axles they moved the steering stop to the front of the axle? Mine, 25's are on the back side and don't interfere. :?

That's what I was looking at, my stops on my 62 is on the back side. I say flip the shocks over!

On my Dana 27 the stops are on the opposite side of the shock mounting - shocks are behind the axle.

On my jeep the shocks mount on the backside of the axle also. Could you just swap the lower spring plates to the opposite side that would make your shocks mount to the rear also. John

My 27 has the bolt on the front side of the axle as well, the shocks on there now are dented from the suspension flexing. Im looking for a solution for when I get new shocks and was hoping to just swap front spring plates, but as stated above, I guess that not going to work.. good luck and let us know your solution if you find one.

Some denting of the outer tube won't affect the operation of the shock absorber. The outer, largest diameter tube is the outer wall of the oil reservoir. The inner tube, where the piston rides, is smaller in diameter and protected from denting by the outer tube. A little denting won't matter as long as you don't wear a hole in the outer tube.

Moving the spring plates isn't as easy as it sounds. Even if the plates were symmetric, you'd have to move the top mounts on the frame, and those are welded. You may as well put new pins on the spring plates at the back, if you are going to move the top mounts.
