I bought a speedometer from Morris 4x4 and put 40 miles on it before it quit, sent it back, waited 2 weeks to get replacement, installed it today and got 2 miles before it quits too. Any one else have these results? should i ask for money back and shop elsewhere ?
also I need another real differential cover , what junk yard vehicle should I be looking for ? 74 cj5
My transfer case will not shift into 4 hi, with single stick all the way forward it is in 2 hi,pull back once for neutral, then 2 lo, then 4 lo. shouldn't 4 hi be all the way forward ?
Thanks in advance for any responses, I wouldn't have attempted this restoration without reading this site.

I bought a new speedometer from Quadratec. Several hundred miles without a problem.

Did you replace the speedo cable? A bad cable can cause the speedo to stop working...and they're not expensive.

Which diff cover? Yours stock should be a 30 front and 44 rear. What do you mean by real diff cover? Are. You looking for heavier duty than stock? Lots of aftermarket options out there as well as some stock applications that are reasonably heavy duty. More info needed here.
I agree, check your speedo cable. If ok then I'd suspect substandard replacement speedos. Were these cheap units made overseas? If so that could be your issue. Sometimes spending more up front for better quality is cheaper in the long run.

the speedo cable is new , the speedometer had a sticker on it " made in china"
My rear diff cover , the oil plug will not tighten, it keeps on screwing in and never tightens. I assume it is a dana 44. Jeep is a 74 cj 5 with a 304.

There's your problem on the speedometer.

Any low pinion dana 44 can be a donor for the rear cover. I just scrapped a couple as I couldn't give them away. If you get one from the front of a Dodge, GM, Full size Jeep, etc. with a 44 front axle that will give you a heavier duty cover. Do not use one from a high pinion front like used in Fords. The fill plug is too high and will overfill the diff.

I scored a NOS speedo still in the factory box on ebay a couple of years ago-you might try there.

I had the same problem on my cover as you so I used a small bung plug out of a 55 gallon drum for my plug. it has a flange on it and will not screw all of the way in. there is a rubber gasket on it also. Not a leak one since i installed it several years ago. I did this to both the front and back covers.

Where do you find a new reproduction speedometer that ISN'T one of the substandard overseas units? The only ones I've ever seen have been the Crown and/or Omix stuff. I don't know of any source of new CJ speedometers that are American made. The only other option would be a good used OEM unit.

Or NOS. They are out there if you look. Another option is having the original rebuilt. There are companies that do this as well. The point is, there are options other than poorly made parts for lots of this stuff, speedo's included.

Well the option I'm taking on my CJ5 is eliminating the stock speedo entirely. I'm going with an aftermarket Auto Meter unit and filling in the big 5.5" hole with a piece of sheet metal.
