I've seen it many times with incorrect application Delco distributors, distributor caps, and rotors.
Most common occurrence/story is purchase and install a rebuilt unit from a parts store.
I can't think of any occurrences with Prestolite distibutors.

I would say its spark. It's either the plug wires out of order or the distributor is out of position.

Jpflat2a is right. I don't think there is an evenfire prestolite distributor. Evenfire motors are mid-year '76 and all delco units.

Follow the distributor installation procedure. Find TDC. Install it with the rotor pointing to #1 on the cap and install the wires in the proper order.

Actually mid year '77 but all else applies. I've owned both odd and even fire '77 231's.

maybe the cap I know my jeep had the earlier 67 distributor so when I ordered one for a 68 I kept getting the wrong one, ran like crap. I guess they switched in between years somewhere.

I suggest you perform a compression test. If you tried to start this motor on bad gas (I know from experience), it is possible you might have some stuck intake valves. The bad gas coats the valve stems with varnish and they stick open. Anyway, a compression check will eliminate part of the question, one way or the other.
