I have a hardtop for my Cj 5 and never mounted it so I'm on the windshield portion of my restoration and I'm wondering how it mounts so I can make sure it works before paint. Any pics or info would be great.

    Thanks

What brand hard top? My Koenig hardtop on my 62 just goes over the front of the windshiled, down to the rail that holds the soft top on. It has a slight curve to match and fits pretty well.

You need the side channels on the windsheild frame.

I used what I call rivnuts. Thay work like a pop rivet the puts threads in the sheet metal then you thread a bolt into it.

Harbor Freight sells the riv nut tool that works ok as long as you aren't hard on it. I've got one and it works ok. Bought it after pricing the professional grade and couldn't justify the cost.

Dpard, it does depend on what top you have as there were variations in how they mounted to the windshield depending on manufacturer and model of top. The spacers and hinges for the doors were different as well.

Orrville and Meyer tops are the same.

Here's a pic of mine with the windshiled side filler pieces, not differrent color from the w/s frame:

Here's how it looks mounted: Note, mine does not fit well in towards the rear of the vehicle. I have top gap in the back, noticeable around the rear corners.

Thanks for the pics. How about one a little closer showing some of the detail of the fuillers. I bought a hardtop(Meyer) and I don't have the fillers or the top windshield mount hinges. Have hinges on the doors, just not the body mounted parts.

OK, here's a few pics, now this is a Meyer top, and the windshiled frame is off of a YJ, so some similarities to an ECJ5 frame are gonna be off. This is a top for an ICJ5, not an ECJ5, so the windshiled lays back more, but fit should be similiar.

The upper windshiled hinges are homemade, and a bit ugly, but functional.

I hate to ask this, but does anyone make replacement filler strips for the Myers hard top for the early CJ5?

There are some hardware pieces, like handles and latches and door props, still available as I recall. No source for the rest of the stuff but used parts, AFAIK.

Which pieces exactly do you need? The filler strips shown in Long & Low's post are only for the '76 or later Jeeps, or for earlier CJs that have been converted to the later windshield. Hinges are the hardest, but most of the other stuff you should be able to find.

The top hinges on my Meyer top stick out from the windshield, about 4 inches.

If you have the old ones you might be able to get a sheetmetal shop to make them. I just bought a set on E-Bay, but haven't received them yet.

RSSI makes / sells some stuff they call M10, which filts in the door glass channels for the driver and passenger doors. It's a snug fit.

    Thanks Timgr,
The top I just bought did not come with the windshield filler strips. It did come with the hinges. The P.O. welded one onto the passenger side of the window so I get to clean that up. No big deal. I got a set of the installation instructions from Triumph. (thanks Triumph !! great help !!) And they show a window fill strip # 2 of the instructions. These are the ones I am looking for. My top has the door hinges like the ones in 1970cj6's first photo at the top of this post.
