Later today I am going to look at a 1979 Buick Regal for the purpose of getting the v-6 engine for my 1961 cj 5.
In research I see that the regal could have a 196 c.i or the 231 c.i. even fire.
How do I tell the difference in looking at the engine?
    Need a quick response please.

If it's still intact look at the emissions decal on the core support or under side of the hood. Rarely but sometimes they are on the inner fender well.
If it says engine family 3.8L then it's a 231, if 4.1L then a 252. Either are great donors. Obviously if smaller liter displacement then a smaller engine.

Drove 60 miles to look at the car. The seller originally said it was a V- 4 ., which only means he didn't have a clue.
    Turned out to be a V-8 (4.9).
I thank you all for great advice and quick response.
