I am currently restoring my 75 cj5 and plan on purchasing a new steel tub, windshield frame, and fenders. I've seen the steel tub kits (tub, hood, fenders,& windshield frame)selling for $4800 but was wondering if anyone had purchased an Omix tub or tub kit and what they thought of the quality. Anyone know what Willys-Overland charges for a tub and is it also an Omix tub but pre drilled? Let me know what you think.

    Thanks,
    Steve

Much discussion in the forums here, a search here will bring up many, many threads.

All the steel tubs come from the same supplier in the Philippines, Willys Overland reworks them to be more correct. I would call them directly.

The general consensus is to expect lots of work on the "new" tub to make it fit correctly...and to search Craigslist and/or other ads for an OEM tub first.

Mmm. You can buy a CJ with a decent body for less than the cost of a repop body. If you really want to restore your Jeep, I suggest you look for a donor car from the south and/or west and put the two together. Then sell off the leftovers.

This very solid California tub has been on Ebay for over a week without a single bid: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Jeep...Accessories&hash=item45fae1f044#ht_500wt_1182

Granted it's a 78 and wouldn't be a direct replacement for your 75, but it's an example of what's available outside the rust belt. Even at the buy it now price of $300, I'd wager you could ship it back to PA for much less than the cost of a new tub.

I have personal experience with Omix/Crown sheetmetal. I purchased a new set of '72 and newer fenders. Both sides drooped, didn't bolt up directly, and one side was about an inch longer than the other. I just had to re-work a set of Omix replacement fenders for my daughter's '70 (fenders came with the Jeep) so they'd bolt up. Had to cut out for the shock mounts, bolt holes in wrong locations, etc. I'd try and find oem if I were you.

All the replacement body panels I puchased have been since replaced with junkyard parts. I wasn't very satisfied with the thickness of the metal, especially the windshield frame and hood.

You may want to check out scratchanddentparts.com as they have a bunch of returned scratch and dent tubs on the cheap...and I believe they are located right there in PA.Might be worth it if you don't mind doing some minor work.
