Did I pay a fair price for this cj5?

I just bought a 1967 CJ5 for $700. This is the first jeep I have owned so I don't know if I now own a bunch of parts or I have a restorable vehicle. The PO told me it has been sitting for about 5 or 6 years. I bought a battery and got it started. Then I found a crack in the distributor cap and replaced that. Now it runs and idles a little. It has no brakes at all so I have bought a master cylinder and am putting that in this week. The windshield has a crack, the gas gauge doesn't work, but the headlights do. The body seems to be in good shape and doesn't have any dents or rust out spots. The passenger side floor pan has a few holes and the seats are shot. I would like some feedback from you pros as to whether or not I have made a mistake buying this and if not what you would do, and in what order to fix it up. Since I am new here I can't attach any pictures so I have tried to describe it the best I could. Thanks

 

Where are you located? What will the jeep be used for? What is more important time or money? Post pics. Try a photo hosting site (shutterfly, photobucket, etc.) then copy and paste the address. Sounds like a decent deal to me.

or you wouldn't have bought it if you thought his price was too high, right?
The wheel cylinders could be frozen as well (if the master cylinder doesn't fix the problem)
I've never heard of buyers remorse over a $700 purchase.....

Location plays a huge role as does condition and equipment. Around here a clean, rust and dent free tub is worth around $500-$600.

 

With all the jeep officianados (sp?) on this site, you will be able to fix or replace everything on this jeep back to a reliable condition. Price sounds OK to me from your description.

 

I wish these kind of deals would show up in my area, my wife however is glad they don't.

Any Jeep is restore-able. I knew one guy who said that he bought his Jeep for $1 and in the end, after spending thousands of dollars fixing it up, he felt he got ripped off. I on the other hand have put about $5,000 into mine and it still doesn't run, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.

 

Ditto, but mine runs now, it doesn't steer or move yet, and if you sit it in your sitting on the gas tank.......
Heck, I spent $800 on boxes of stuff, I'm still sorting out.

Heck, it's only money, relax they are just like Doritos, they'll make more.

 

lol I think everyone that buys a jeep is excited at first then quickly regrets it! haha But with some parts and tinkering youll be glad you got it sooner or later. sounds like a fair deal

 

700 wont get much out here, rust running 1500 all day...no rust not here R)R)

 

I've got about $1000 in mine so far and that's just in buying the Jeep and the engine (and it needs a lot of chassis work and even more body work), but, as my girlfriend would say - I'm happy as a clam!

 

Thank you all for the responses. I live in Kansas. I have restored and rebuilt a lot of cars and trucks in my day, but when I retired I thought I had all that out of my system. Guess not. The only differents now is that I don't have the money to throw into this project like before. Yesterday I got the master cylinder on and today a friend is going to help me bleed the brakes. Then I should know where I stand with the wheel cylinders. The brake hoses look good and not dried out and cracking so I think I can use them. I will need a new exhaust system because one of the headers is in pretty bad shape. Whenever I am allowed to post pictures I will start my restoration of this jeep and with your help we will see where this project ends up. Thanks again

The forum does not host pictures here. You need to host them somewhere else and link to them. There's a sticky post about how to post pictures in the help forum, as I recall.

Before you put a lot of money into repairing your brakes, look into replacing them with the later 11"x2" brakes. Parts for the earlier 9" and 10" brakes are much more expensive than the later 11" Bendix brakes, and it's a nice upgrade. The 11" Bendix brakes were used on a lot of different cars and trucks (F-100s in particular), and you can convert cheaply if you are resourceful.

 

Thank you for the information. We bled the brakes and thankfully they work just fine. I might replace them at a later date but for now all I had to do was replace the master cylinder. I am trying to find new spark plug wires now. I am replacing the spark plugs, distributor cap, points and condenser now. Thanks again and I will try to find a place to post some pictures.

Not bad at all. Wrong tail lights, electric wipers, hacked dash and is that an overdrive I see? You forgot the engine pictures. But it looks like you got a good deal.

NAPA has or can get tune up parts for it. That's where I buy things for my '66.

 

:iagree: Yep, that isn't bad at all. Should be fairly easy to fix up.
