There has to be an easier way to fill the T90 and Dana 18. I tried topping off the T90 through the fill plug today and man, I got oil every where When I thought it was full I checked the Dana 18 and it drained a lot. I managed to fill the T90 until oil was leaking out of the drain plug, but man, what an adventure. I even purchased a pump from a local auto parts store. Apparently the screw lid only fits a gallon container. With a piece of plastic tubing, I could connect it to the oil container but I had to have the container up higher than the pump to pump it. The tubing kept coming off and oil was everywhere. I read somewhere people too off the top of the T90 through the access cover on the floor board. What of the Dana 18? If so, what opening do you pour the oil through? If one takes off the cover of the T90, will that mess anything up? Is it more trouble than using the fill plugs?
    Thanks,
    Paul

I have a 1960 CJ5 3 speed on the floor and I'm about ready to drain the transmission and refill...I would also like to know as well. I don't mean to hijack your thread 57CJ5 but I would like to know also. Another question I have, does the transmission drain into the transfer case and is there just one drain plug?
    Thank you.

taking the top cover off is more trouble than using the fill plugs. yes its messy. yess the t90 and d18 share oil. I'd fill the 18 first and the T90. They both have drain plugs.

I used to have a gallon jug/pump but extended the hose long enough to let the jug sit on the floor.

I have used a pump setup for both Gal and smaller bottles (though it's cheaper to get the Gal Jugs). If you need to, find a longer hose to hook to the pump.

I have a pump that I got at my FLAPS that fits a gallon container. It has a little plastic clip on the end of the tube that squeezes it in place within the fill hole so I can use two hands while I pump. I just filled both diffs, trans, and tc with it and it worked very well. Granted I don't have the body on yet so it was easier doing everything from above but it would work just as well from underneath.

I don't have the gallon jugs of gear oil. I bought smaller containers of NAPA oil. I sure could of used a pump that connected to the smaller container. I used a hose that connected to the suction part of the pump and basically had to try and wedge the container up higher than the pump and try an hold the pump with 2 hands and pump. The tubing kept coming off and needles to say, well there is an Exon Valdez spill on my driveway..I was able to wash it out of my hair last night though.

You may have washed your hair but that 90 weight smell will linger for a few days:)

I do as others suggested buy a longer piece of tubing and leave the bottle on the ground. It doesn't need to be a messy job

I use the standard plastic bottles w/ the tip on them then use a hose clamp to attach
a piece of hose. Then insert the hose in the tranny and squeeze the bottle.

For years I used a gallon jug with a pump and it worked great. Find a good deal on quart bottles? Us em to fill the gallon jug. I also found a regular dispenser with a professional pump someone was getting rid of. I keep it filled as I find good sales on gear oil

when i had the floorboard access covers off i found it very quick and easy to just fill it from the shift tower. Because the oil is shared between the two, it migrated over to the transfer case without having to pump it through the plug hole.

I made another access cover next to the one that is already on the tranny hump on the passenger side. I remove the breather plug through this access hole and use a piece of tubing I slide on the the spout of the 90 weight bottle. All you have to do is squeeze it in until it runs out of the side plug. My access cover looks identical to the one that is already on the hump. i made it out of sheet metal.

I bought a pump that goes on a 5 gal bucket. Oil is cheaper in bulk and doesn't have a shelf life.
