CJ5 fold out windshield? How can I tell the year of the jeep?

    Hi folks,

A friend of mine just bought a CJ5 that he wanted more information on. Since he doesn't have a computer, I thought I might be able to ask some questions for him on here.

First off, his CJ5 has a fold out windshield. Sort of like the older CJ2A frames. It is a two piece shield, but the inner folds out.
Was this a common frame? All that I've seen, have had a one piece shield.

Second question. He has no idea what year this jeep is. If I can get the serial number off it someplace, is there a way to tell from that? The previous owner thought it was from the 50's but not sure. It has the snorkle cutout in the hood, and the battery box has the welded cover over it.

Anyway, thanks for any and all help, it is appreciated!

    Have a great day!

    Chris

It was a rare and now desirebale option to have a fold out shield on a cj5. The serial # tags on the firewall will tell you the year with a little research. Welcome to the forum!

55 was the first year for the CJ5, so that narrows it down a couple years :D

    Thanks folks,

He just bought it from craigslist here in Central NY, so it may take a few days to get all the info. I believe it has the data tags on the firewall, but if not, where else might I find a serial number that would help identify the year?
I thought the windshield frame might be special, I'm more of the military jeep guy but thought I had heard about it before....
Thanks again for any and all info, it is appreciated...

The windshield is commonly referred to as a tilt out or safari windshield and were used ccommonly on export models. Seems hit or miss where else they were used. Windshields can be easily swapped on these so I wouldnt use that to determine year, although if you know for sure it is original to the Jeep then it may be a clue. If the vin tag is missing check the right rear of the frame above the raised portion above the axle formstamped numbers. May have to lightly sand the frame to see the numbers

Look for the VIN plate here. (ignore the oooga horn) First 5 digits are the model, i.e. 57548 is CJ5, the next numbers are the serial. There's a list here somewhere to look up the year model by model number and s/n range per year.

    Hi again,

Here are the numbers off the firewall:

    8305 165801

Can someone point me in the right direction as to where I might find the list of serial numbers by date? I have one for the CJ2A's but nothing for a jeep this new...

Thanks again for the help, it is appreciated!

I guess I am a little confused at this point, as my tag says 8305 165801, but from the chart listed on the website, it says 8305 217502 UP so how could mine have a lower number than the start number on the chart? Or am I not reading the chart correctly?

Thanks again, for the help and info, it is appreciated!

I could be wrong but, 8305 designates it as a Universal and 165801 place the manufacture date as Nov.1963.

That's what I get too, but one of the cahrts on that link listed a higher starting number than what I had.

I think I'm gonna go with Nov 63 until I find out otherwise....

Neat jeep...wish I had it myself, but it is in good hands....
