I think its mostly because of the length of the drive line. A truck 4-speed manual will be much shorter making for a more reasonable rear drive shaft.
Had an NV3500 in my S-10 and it was a good transmission. More of a street vehicle transmission though, with the close ratios and not so low first gear.
Have you looked at NV4500’s? Granny first, OD 5th, kinda the best of both worlds but then again it’s a longer transmission than a truck 4-speed.

my shaft is about 14" long right now

according to Novak the 4500 is 19" long and my th350 that's in there now is 21" long. so id be ok there but i was concerned about the size of that tranny clearing the tunnel etc

Ideally an nv3500 with the 4.3/sbc pattern would be ideal for size and od etc

I don't think that 19" length includes the bellhousing though. I know there's no way an NV-4500 will fit in a '5 without lengthening the wheel base. I put one in the '6 because it wouldn't fit in a '5.

very true, those measures where without the bell etc. I went through this years ago when i had originally considered it and realized the lack of space

You have to use a separate site, such as photobucket or similar.
