Front and Rear Bumpers for a 1970 CJ5

I have a quick question about bumpers. Everything seems to start at 1976. But there are a few bumpers out there that have the "will fit 1955-1976" message on them. So my question is...

Will a bumper for a 1976 and later CJ5 fit onto an Early CJ5? Are the frame width's different? And if not is this something you can buy and just expect to "modify" to fit?

    I appreciate the help.

Front frame width is the same. A '76-on painted bumper has a different PN from the previous years, but I believe it will still fit. Rear is wider from '76 on - definitely not compatible.

Careful of your definitions for the rear "bumper." There was a chrome rear bumper for intermediate CJs, but the painted steel part that goes across the back is not a bumper; it's actually a cross member. There's also a draw bar thatwas a popular option, which some incorrectly call a bumper. Again, the frame width changes in '76, so none of these will be compatible across that boundary.

Almost everything changes for the 1976 model.

I had a local guy that was making bumpers for CJ-7's fabricate some for my 69 CJ-5. I had him make the rear bumper 3"'s shorter and the front bumper 2"'s shorter. They look good on the frame but the tub is off right now so the jury is out until i mount the tub next month. I would post some pics but can't figure out how?

I had the front built at 52" and the rear 55"

search (DIRTWORX bumpers) he advertises shipping for free to lower 48 states and the bumpers he built were high quality and reasonably priced.

I've had him build a front and rear bumper for my '69 and a rear bumper for my TJ. He does great work.

The frame width on the front is the same but the top to bottom measurement of the frame is greater on the '76 up frame. Spacers are needed to put a '76 up bumper on a '75 and older frame. Going through this with the Daughter's '70 right now.

I just bought one from Walck's, their SKU is 906781. Seems like it was about $75, fits just right and is a spot on match for the original on my '70.

There was also a painted steel rear step bumper available on the intermediate CJ5's as well. I've never seen one but it's shown in the special equipment book.

Thanks for all the help guys. I think I'm going to go with the dirtworx that Totalhavek and EricM spoke about. The price is right and it exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks Guys!

Be advised that there is some variation in the bolt holes over the years. For my '69, I had to redrill a couple, and I had to angle the bumper out slightly with washers so it didn't interfere with the body (but that was with the optional spare tire carrier/jerry jug portion)
