Borgeson Shaft wont fit?

My new Borgeson steering shaft will not fit? I have a 81 or 82 J10 steering box so I ordered the Borgeson manual steering shaft (had been runing the factory manual shaft) it is soo close but will not slide on. Any suggestions? Thanks My jeep is a 1975 CJ5

 

Sometimes the splines have small burrs on them (on the steering box input) that keep the tighter toleranced aftermarket joints from sliding on. Check the splines on the gear box very carefully. You may need to clean them with a file to get it to fit. I've run into this several times.

 

What size is the shaft coupler? I take it you are converting to power steering, so with that said, the manual steering coupler is 3/4" while the power steering is 13/16". If this is the case, I would think you could send it back and exchange it for a correct size.

Otherwise, if it is the correct size, take a wire brush to the threads on the steering gear shaft and clean it up nicely. Should slide right on, fit tightly. Good luck!

 

i have a borgson shaft also setting on my workbench. I ordered the power steer shaft since i did a conversion . I am not ready to install it so i just tried to prefit it and would not go on my gearbox either. I say it would not fit but it would start just going on and would not go any further.very, very I thought a BFH would pursade it on but then i might never get it on. it fit right on the collumn splines though

 

Ya, it is a pretty snug fit. I just medium to lightly tapped mine on with smaller hammer. One other thought though before would be to check and make sure they are the same spline count. Should be 33 if I remember right.

 

Yeah < I converted to power steering a year ago, Was told a J10 power steering box had the same spline count as the manual CJ shaft. I can fell the spline engage but not very far. I've thought about a hammer too. Prob gonna call borgeson Monday. See what they say.

 

Ya, I hope that works out. I had a borgeson shaft already, so called Borgeson to get the part number for u joint I needed, then called summit and ordered it for about $10 dollars cheaper than through Borgeson. I think just the end was $75, which kinda hurt, but well worth it. They are pretty proud of those joints.

 

make sure you let us know what you find out when you call borgeson. I think it will take more than a light tap of a hammer to get mine to go on. i am afraid to beat mine on as i dont think i could ever get it off.

 

IIRC the manual shaft and the power steering input shaft have different OD's. Not to mention the J10 PS shaft probably has that nipple protruding from the end. Those were used with the rag joint instead of the bell coupler. I've cut em off with a hacksaw to make it work.
Not sure if the spline count is the same.

 

I took a triangled shaped small file and lightly cleaned up the splines on the gear box and a couple on the new ujoint. a couple where not cut as deeply as the rest. A little tapping with the hammer and I'm back on the road. But now my new thicker shaft rubs on my exhaust. :-()

I shortened the upper piece (outer telescoping piece) of mine by about 1.5" to clear the exhaust. I have coated shorties and didn't want to use a hammer. The upper u-joint on the Borgeson changes the angle just enough it slightly touched the exhaust. I have inches to spare now without a dinged up exhaust.

 

Thats a cool thought.
