By way of explanation, this is my first winter with my '75 CJ5, so I still have tons to learn. My question is this: I have found four wheel drive low, and I've found neutral (where no drive wheels at all are engaged). What I can't tell is whether/how to get the Jeep into two wheel drive high or four wheel drive high. Can anyone help me?

    Many thanks.

    From front to back,

    4HI - 2HI - N - 2LO - 4LO

2LO is not marked, but most people can find it. 4LO is al the way back - you can make the knob touch the top of the tool box.

If you can find neutral, one step forward is 2HI. Then 4HI should be significantly further forward. You can shift from 2HI to 4HI at any speed, as long as the hubs are locked in.

Well, if it is the original transfer case, you would probably have a Dana 20 or D20. 4 High would be all the way towards the front with the front hubs locked, 2 High just behind that with the hubs unlocked, followed by Neutral, then finally 4 Low with the hubs locked all the way towards the rear. Sometimes these transfer cases are worn a bit and cause the definitions to be blured a bit while shifting...

    4H
    2H
    N
    4L

....again, this depends on whether or not you have the stock setup. Can you tell us a bit more about your Jeep or what problems you are running into?

If you are having trouble shifting you may need to try putting the Jeep into reverse and going very slowly while you shift the transfer case...this may help with some minor alignment of your transfer case gears.

If you've been having trouble I wouldn't try the full speed shift until you're sure there are no other problems that are preventing the shift.

You can ****f either if locking hub are locked in or not...if they are not locked in you will still be in 2wd....

If you want the front wheel to have power you'll need the locking hub locked!!!.

Another thing i found abou my dana 20, when i put my stick in 4low and i push i litte forward it disengage the front axle so i've got 2low....if there anyone as seen this on his jeep?

    Not correct.

If the hubs are not locked in, you can only shift into 4HI at a full stop. If you try to shift into 4HI while moving and the hubs are not locked, gears will clash (loudly) and you will not be able to shift.

Only shift into 4WD with the front hubs locked.

can someone give me a good reason as to why a person should ever need to try and shift from 2wheel to 4 wheel while moving at road speed? I have had to sometimes move slooowly foward or backward to get it in gear. i wont do it even in my 98 chevy w/ the electric shift. I have never yet needed to shift on the fly. i just dont think it is a good idea.

Need... I guess the reason is because I'm driving along on the pavement, and I turn onto a dirt road or trail, and don't want to stop to shift. There's no need to stop if the hubs are locked in - the front axle is moving at the same speed as the rear, and you can connect them or not at will. I've done it hundreds of times.

Or you find yourself driving down the road and realize you are about to hit a slick/icy/snowy patch and want to be in 4 wheel drive before you hit the slick spot but don't have time to slow down.

I do it all the time in the sand as well. I run 2 wheel drive most of the time but occasionally want 4 wheel drive before I hit a bad spot but don't want to lose my momentum.

I've shifted into 4H from 2H and vera visa a few times on the fly.
I make sure I've slowed down and use the clutch, Bada-Bing in it goes!
Never went from 2H to 4L though moving???? (too afraid to hear a clunk, look out and see oil and gears on the ground)!
When I find myself all F**** up as to where the transfer case is, (Senior moments! I wiped the paint off my knob with paint thinner in a dumb move a few years ago).
I find neutral, bump it forward to 2 H, or 4H and you can feel it come back into 2H.

Yes, you should not (can't?) shift from high to low range while moving at any appreciable speed. I expect that would be accompanied by some awful gear clash noises.

Sometimes it helps to be moving at a baby crawl though - just enough to get the gears to mesh. It will go in with a clunk, but does no harm IMO.
