Getting ready to shoot some paint on the M38A1 here in the next couple of weeks. Still haven't completely decided on a color though. It was blue and I was thinking of the Silver Birch Metallic color you see on the newer Chevy/GMC pickups/SUV's but my painter is afraid he might mess up the multistage paint sprayer. (Plus it is pretty expensive) My wife seems to think that a shade of green with a tan top would look pretty good. (Not to mention single-stage and cheaper to do) But I can't really decide on a shade of green. Does anyone have any shots of their green jeeps or have a particular color you like on a Jeep? Of course, I'll paint it the color I want, but I'd like some advice from other Jeep people about what they think looks pretty good on old Jeeps.

well do you want to blend in to the background or do you want to stickout.
A darker shade of green will help to blend in or a shade of red, yellow or orange will get you noticed.

Personally I dont really like the color of my jeep but in hides a lot of craches and mistakes in the paint.

Just a thought about the paint. Using a base/clearcoat type paint might be a little more but I think it is easier to use because that system uses multiple coats and getting a nice shine on the finishing coats IMO is easier. Single stage type paints go from dull to a run or sag quickly. I know the cost is a little more but its not something you do over and over plus I think that the depth of color and overall appearance is much nicer. :D

Oakesmi2 -- What is the color of your Jeep?

TheBeave1955 -- Hmm, something to think about I guess.

I'm looking for a color that would hide most of the flaws in my rather medicore bodywork. The lighter colors would probably work better for that I guess.

Whatever color you pick I hope it's as close to an original color and texture/shine as you can get.

I just like it that way I guess.

Green with tan.... great combination! I've got the same. I really like the color of Lynn's Jeep. On my M38A1, I'm going to use the original drab green. Since its semigloss, it should be pretty forgiving with scratches and not so great bodywork.

So, it's looking like many of you M38A1 owners (mines a '53) prefer the OD green. Perhaps with a little shine to it instead of flat. I never really considered OD I guess. I definatly have "not so great" bodywork.

Mines a 96 GM color called Bright Metallic Green. I have the seats in Tan and the top is black.

If I had to repaint I think I would choose either the pea soup green original color or a metallic blue.

you can see it in my Avatar.

Now that I think about it I am somewhat fond of mint green color
Just because you don't see many of them out there.

There are several different shades of OD green. There are semi gloss and flat colors and when you go to the guy that mixes it up for you you can get it shiny or as dull as you want. Just a note, the guy that mixes my paint says that adding more gloss allows it to last longer.

Dondo: The Post Office says you should get my footman's loop Friday or Monday. Check out the "Screeming Yellow" paint. Use that, and you won't have to paint the footman's loop!

I'll need to paint my 5 one of these days, too. I'm guessing totally flat paint will hide body reality, but will be really hard to keep clean when you do wash it. On the other end, gloss paint is a snap to clean, but shows every little scar and merit badge in the bodywork. Mine hasn't seen soap for close to 25 years. The paint was flat, eventually. Color? If I was starting over I'd like the metallic green they used in the ads around 1965 or so.

I remember my autobody instructor in highschool saying that dark bronze hid marginal body work. Of course this was 1980 when brown was the hot CJ7 color! ;)

Putt Putt is flat black and has bondo popping out at an alarming rate. Still looks good from 20 feet due to the flat paint! I need to get the grinder out!

There was a nice green GM had on Trailblazers in 2002. It was a very light green --almost confused as a beige. I thought that would look good on a Jeep. I agree on the SIlver Birch --Good on an old-school Jeep.

OD in a semi-gloss would be a good choice. I think they call that finish "suede" and there's a recipe for its clearcoat. Suede in black is very popular for hot rods now - sort of an SR-71 finish.

I haven't shot any myself, but I've read that the solid colors and single-stage paints are easiest. If you look at http://www.autocolorlibrary.com/cmg/mae.html they have prices for PPG Omni MAE (a good balance of quality and value) that depends on color.

I like Fairway Green, a 1973 OE Jeep color. 1975 Reef Green is also nice. Both are metallic.

Here's my Fairway Green '73; the color is brighter than this (a scan of an old Polaroid).

Later it had a tan Levis top, which looked really sharp.
