To gas shock or not ot gas shock...

I just installed a 2" lift Soft Ride springs and 31" tires on my nice shiney green '74 CJ5.
The existing shock as new (er).
So not ever wanting the charge cards to be lonely............................
What kind of ride would I get if I swapped out the oil shocks for a set of gas over oil shocks?
Now, this jeep is just for "on road" only, if I wanna grind up the dirt, I'll take my trials bike or my KTM out.
Just wondering if they are worth a look and the extra $$$???

That would depend on shock valving.

However, for just on road use, there really isn't much to be gained from a gas charged shock on a jeep.

I kinda, sorta thought that, but one never knows until one asks!
Plus add to it the light fiberglass body.
That's what's great about sites like this, 100000 of imputs to give you all the different angles!
They just would look cool under the jeep!

get another jeep I put gas charged shocks on the rear of my 67 when i had too soft of springs because it swayed and squated like mad. They were from the front of a jeepster commando. It helped hold it up and made it a little less mushy. But i put a proper set of springs on it so i swaped back to the regular shocks.

 

Shocks don't hold up a jeep. (well, except for the air shocks).
Leaf springs hold up your fine ride, the shocks just dampen the bouncing.
That's what I have a "bouncey jeep".
I think it's cuz the lightweight fiberglass body on the frame.
I was hoping the soft ride springs would help, (I needed springs, I was bottomong out really easy with the orginals).
Prehaps I shoulod toss in a couple bags of sansd to weigh the jeep down some.
What I need is a set of shocks with soft compressing and a slow rebound, (this set up is from all the years of setting up my off road bikes).
This way I'd hit a pot hole, the springs/shocks would compress and sslloowwllyy lift back up, making a smoother ride.

well they were pressureized so they pushed out. they were hard to compress and rebounded easy. I assumed thats what you meant by gas rather than oil. My brother is a mechanic so he brings home all that kinda stuff when its still good so i have a nice selection

You also need to realize the shocks are valved to match vehicle weight, load carrying capability, etc. So just because a shock will "fit" doesn't mean it will ride or handle well.

 

well you know people. especially old ones. The manual says i need new shocks at ### miles. so iv got to do that. He doesnt do any funny buisness. he could care less weather hes got somthing to do or not. I know theyre designed for each individial aplication. But im not about to pay for something i can get for free with a little bit of trial fitting
