I took the floor pan off and saw stamping on the top passenger side of the casing. It says J206 2 and their is also a faint G above the J. Is this a serial number for the transmission or maybe a rebuilder stamp?

From NOVAK: The T86 is very similar in appearance and build to the Jeep T90, and these gearboxes can be confused with each other on first glance. The T86 will typically be cast with "T86AA" on its case.

    Thanks!

As I recall my '67 with 225/t86/d18 has similar markings. I'm out of town for the holidays but I'll look when I'm home

That is a T-86. If you are planning a rebuild be aware that someone could have swapped the T-90 guts into the T-86 case. Only way to tell for sure is to pull the shifter top. If the first sliding gear rides on straight splines in the main shaft it's T-90 innards. If it's helical then that is T-86 parts.

It is a T86. I was just wondering about the stamp on the top. Thanks!

You can use a T-86 top on a T-90 and vice verse as long as you use the corresponding innards in the transmission case....

The transmission works great. Does anyone have any knowledge about the stamping on the top right rear corner? It says J206 2 Thanks.[IMG]

I'd guess it's a Borg-Warner marking. The transmissions are identified by the metal tag under one of the top bolts (which unfortunately often are mssing). there's not much else to know about the T-86, other than the obvious (it's a T-86, and the application is a CJ-5).
