I'm planning on restoring my grandfathers '51 CJ3A. I'm new to jeeps so I'm not real familiar with them.

So I just bought a saginaw 4 speed auto attached to a dana 18 w/ warn overdrive by an advanced adapters 50-1000 adapter.

I'm going to sell the saginaw because I have another tranny that I'm going to use with the dana 18.

I'm trying to get the two separated from one another but can't seem to get the transmission to slide out of the transfer case. I took all of the bolts out and loosened the nut that is on the stud in the t/c. I looked at the diagrams on AA's website. I just can't seem to get the transmission to pull away from the t/c. Am I doing something wrong?

Any information you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Saginaw 4 speed is not an automatic transmission, it's a manual transmission. There are 5 bolts that hold the transfer case to the adapter between the transmission and transfer case. There are 4 that go into the adapter from the transfer case side, and one that goes into the transfer case on the passenger side through the adapter from the front side.

If you have a "small hole" transfer case and adapter then the transfer case input gear must be removed before the transfer case will come off the adapter. This must come out through the back of the transfer case. Most 18transfer cases have a "pto port" covered by a sheetmetal cover held on by 5 bolts on the back of the transfer case.
You say you have a Warn overdrive on this set up. This is installed in this port and must be removed first regardless whether you have a small hole or large hole transfer case.

I just assumed that it was an auto because it doesn't have a shifter at the top of the transmission. All of the three linkages are on the drivers side of the transmission.

I guess I'll have to read up on how to remove the overdrive. Thanks alot for the info. I was scratching my head as how to get them separated.

Yup, should be a Saginaw 4 speed if all the levers are coming out the side of the main part of the side transmission case cover. If there is one lever protruding from the adapter/extension housing (behind the main transmission case) then it would be a Muncie M-20, M-21, M-22, or possibly a Borg-Warner T-10/super T-10.
The linkage mounts externally of the transmission instead of coming out the top. On this set up it would mount to a bracket mounted to the transfer case with rods going to the 3 levers. The rear most lever controls reverse, the middle one 1st and 2nd gear, and the one most forward controls 3rd and 4th gear.

Well I can't seem to get the overdrive to come out of the transfer case. I got them separated about 1/2 an inch but can't get them apart any further. I tried pulling out on the overdrive case while wiggling it back and forth but it doesn't want to come out any further. It seems like it is moving around but won't slide out.

I followed the instructions from both of the links in this thread.

Any suggestions on as to go about getting it out the rest of the way?

At a half inch your real clost to getting it out. The Tcase and Tranny are still together tight, right? I have found using a bearing hammer to tap the case can help while prying on it evenly (takes 2 people).

If you need to, put it back in tight and start over, sometimes working like that back and forth get's them to come out. I had one last summer that took quite a while to work back and forth as it had a slight rust layer to work through. The tolerance on them is very tight.

All else fails - call Herm - he is aways happy to help.

I finally got it to come out. I used a plastic mallet and a piece of pine to tap on the case until it came loose.

It was the bearing that was holding me up. I didn't thing it would take that much effort to get the bearing to come out.

But I finally got it. I thought I had broken or bound the thing up!
