Hello all, I bought a 1946 cj2a that has a stock drivetrain but I would like a little lower gearing off road. I am on the lookout for a t98 tranny but came across a Dana 18 out of a 70cj6 that has a Tera low 3:15 gear set installed. Will the Dana 18 from the 70 swap right into my 46 dana18. As soon as I figure out how to post pics with my phone I will do a intro thread
    thanks rich

The optional T98A for CJ-5,6 (1956 through 1971 F-134 only) was fitted to a 3-1/8" index D18 via Jeep small index cast iron adapter plate.
To mate a T98A to a 4' index transfer case you will need to find the Jeep T18 /D18 adapter plate or buy an aftermarket substitute (large index) adapter plate.
The D18 T98A with 5.38 final drive will provide an 85 /1 crawl ratio.
Not much need for adding Terra Low reduction unless your looking to get extreme.

Depends on what transmission you have now and what transmission the 18 transfer case came off. The 18 could be a large hole version if it came out of a V-6 version but if it came off of a '70 with the F-head and T-90 it could be a small hole version.
If you have a T-90 in your Jeep now which takes the small hole transfer case and the 18 transfer case you get is a large hole transfer case you can remove the rear bearing plate from the T-90 and install a rear bearing retainer and matching bearing for a T-86 which will allow mating of the large hole case to the T-90. One other thing to think about. Jeep T-14's were a 10 spline output shaft. All other stock early Jeep transmissions were 6 spline. This means if it came off of a T-14 the transfer case input gear won't work, you will need the appropriate gear.
