What is this and is it necessary and should I reinstall it? I pulled my tub and painted it and am getting ready to rewire everything up with a new EZ kit and noticed this thing hanging out?

Could it be your external voltage regulator?

Whereabouts on your rig was it?

I wondered if it was something like that it was near the starter I don't know if it was actually plugged in when I disassembled or not?

Voltage regulator for the stock Motorola alternator. You will need that hooked up if you are still using that alternator. Mounts to the passenger fender. Personally I'd upgrade to a Delco 10si or 12si and have a much better alternator with better availability and higher output.

If it used that regulator most likely a Motorola. Some say Motorola on them, sometimes the tag is missing. You can post up a pic and we could probably tell you what you have. You could also search on the internet for pics or on here and will give more info as well.

The Motorola alt will have a half moon looking aluminum plate mounted on the back and usually painted red. The battery wire will connect to a stud on the plate. The regulator you show in the picture is for the motorola alt.

That is definitely a regulator to a Motorola alt. but it is an aftermarket regulator, not built by Motorola. It appears to be a "Jimco" built regulator.

I think I am in luck my alternator say's Delco on it and I don't think that it was even hooked up which leads me to believe that the PO just never pulled it out when he replaced the alternator. From what you guys are saying as long as it says Delco on my alternator I am good to go and "don't" need to reinstall this thing?
