Buy the second one for parts and sell of the stuff you don't need to finance your project. Bet people would come out of the woodwork for some of those parts.....

Been working on the m170. Bought a spare T90 that I thought I could bolt in and upon inspection found that this one also has a bad cluster gear assembly. I am now just going to buy a new cluster gear, small parts kit and bearings and rebuild the original transmission. I was scared at first to tear into the T90, but after I got it all apart after 15 minutes I couldn't believe how easy it was. Now I can't wait to rebuild the T14 and D18 in my "68" this winter. After I rebuild the transmission, I plan on installing it and the transfer case and then moving on seeing if I can get the engine running. I'll update as soon as I have made more progress.

And you guys are right, I should buy the second m170 and part it out, but I would like to see someone else buy it and restore it. I just went down to the previous owners house to buy some parts and she said she would let the second one go for $800. I am having a very hard time not buying it.

IMHO, for one that unique, it'd be a shame to part it out. I've always thought the CJ6's were just the right size, wheelbase wise, and interior room for four, plus gear. If i had a spare $800 laying around, I would be thinking long and hard about a road trip.

yeah, I'd hate to see it parted too even though I suggested it, but if it's really rusty and the parts help keep other ones alive or restored, that can be a good thing.

If even a rusty M-170 showed it's face around here I'd be all over it if I had the cash...

Got all my parts for the t90 rebuild. Got everything assembled and went to marry it to the d18 and realized that I bought a large hole d18. My t90 bearing adapter wouldn't work so I purchased a t86AA bearing adapter and everything went together smooth. I also got a warn overdrive assembly from a co-worker and installed that as well. Here are a few pics:

I think next I'll re-install the trans and transfercase and see if I can get the motor running.

Got the tranny and transfer case back in. Cleaned up all the ground straps and decided to try and start the m170. Found a broken melted spring in the waterproof distributor that goes to the top of the coil to the cap. Replaced that and found two spark plug wires reversed. Fixed that and cleaned up the foot starter assembly as it was stuck. Got that working well and hooked up two batteries and filled the carb with gas and ran a temporary gas line to a gas can as my fuel tank is not installed. Crossed my fingers and hit the starter pedal. Turned over nice and started to fire. After a will it started running. Sounded great, as it has not run in 17 years. The generator even works and was charging the batteries. I blew a squirrel nest/food cache out the tailpipe and onto my garage floor. I ran the jeep a while and just sat and watched it idle for a while. The transmission and transfercase shift well and the clutch feels great. Then I noticed a small coolant leak on the passenger rear side of the engine. It was coming out between the head and block. I ordered a full engine gasket set and started to tear it down. This gave me the oppurtunity to inspect the valves and pistons/cylinders. I noticed a small score in cylinder #3 that is shone in the pictures below. It dosen't look very bad so I think I'll just replace the head gasket for now and run this thing till its time for a full rebuild. Everything else looks good to me. What do you guys think? I also got in all my new u-joints that I will be installing along with some brake parts. I still need to find an E-brake assembly as it was missing from this jeep when I bought it. Here are some pictures:
