Manifold fitting

Looks to be the fitting for the vacuum hose to heater control.

To the heater control, under the dash.

 

The one I am pointing at has a nipple about 1/4 inch wide. The heater control vacuum lines are smalled than that and won't fit. If that is the case, then whats the fitting on the driver's side, same location? My heater hooked to the one on the driver side. That side has a needle shaped fitting that fits the heater vacuum lines.

Is this the original engine/intake manifold to your Jeep? If not could it be from a Commando with a TH-400? would make sense it could be a hookup for the vacuum modulator valve.

 

It's all original. Nothing has been changed. '70 v6, stock heater, oil bather cleaner, bottom mount electric wipers, T-14....etc.

 

Choices - I presume it goes into the manifold passage and has manifold vacuum when running.
1) Provision for a power brake booster. Cap it.
2) Part of PCV circuit - not likely if you already have that hooked up.
3) Heater, provides power for vacuum motors.
4) Control function - goes to one or more of the distributor advance, purge valve (aka burp valve, anti-backfire valve) for the air injection (likely factory equipment on a '70), or some other control function that I can't think of.

Year/model/equipment in your sig, header or message would help.

 

I think Tim has it nailed with #4 below. My '70 still had the air injection system on it and the control valve was connected to this vacuum port.
The vacuum port for the heater control is off of the other side of the intake manifold, it is a fitting with a short length of 1/8 hardline for the vacuum line to connect to.

justn looked at my 1970, that line is connected to the vacum advance on the distributor.

 

Yep, part of the A.I.R. injection system. I replaced mine w/ a pipe plug when I pulled that junk off.

 

Vacuum advace should come off the carburator.

 

And should be hooked to ported vacuum not manifold vacuum unless you have some sort of vacuum control in between.

 

Are you sure that an oil bath is correct for that year model. On my Jeepster it hooks up to the control valve on the air cleaner (with a dry filter) to allow heat from the manifold to enter the snorkel. The other option is that you could have an intake from a jeepster.

 

Just to clarify again......everything is Stock and I'm running everything stock; nothing came from another kind or year of jeep or any other car. I know because I've got 40 year old pictures of this jeep when it was new

Like someone said above, my heater controls come from the driver side

The vacuum advance from the distributor goes to the carb, otherwise if it was connected to the manifold it would stay advanced the whole time.

The only thing I don't still have is that smog pump cr**. Is that what a couple of you guys are talking about?

Yes (though it's not c**p - it works, but it can be a maintenance headache on an old car). The smog pump is called air injection (AI) by Jeep. The AI has a valve that prevents backfiring on deceleration, and it normally is connected to manifold vacuum.

 

I didn't mean to ruffle any feathers about the smog pump. My opinion comes from everyone I've heard talk about it as I don't know. I was told mine went out after it was a year old, it was real expensive to repair and it was not essential to the operation of the engine.....so it was all gone by the time I got it

Sounds like it's that anti backfire deal. I assume I can plug or cap it Tim, right?

Yep - cap it. You shouldn't allow a vacuum leak like that.
