I was noticing the bracing that is attached to my hood in the front and the rear (the ones that go side to side...the front is the one the hood latch grabs onto, the rear is the one the hinges are bolted through) don't appear to be welded. It looks like they are held on by some body putty

So, are those hood braces welded on your Jeep?

They are spot welded in, or should be.

The body putty is there as an insulator/sealer. It helps keep water from getting in causing rust and also keeps noise to a minimum when the hood flexes and the two parts want to rub against each other.

I must not be seeing the spot welds then.

On the front brace, it appears to be attached very firmly on the side closest to the front, the other side of that brace, toward the rear, looks like it is only body putty...and it's lifting up from the hood a bit. I just needed to know how to repair it the right way.

Sounds like the spot welds have broken loose. Seen it on a couple of hoods. Maybe drill a hole through the support very careful not to go into the hood and spot weld back in place.

    I think I will.

Now that I have the Lincoln 140, gas bottle, and new understanding of how to weld, I'm trying to fix all those things on the body before priming/painting.

    Thanks.

I went out and studied mine and it looks like there are only a few spot welds on the ends.
The rest of the span of the channel seems to be glued in place with body panel adhesive. This is not body putty but something much more structural. Mine is still 100%.
If you are looking to repair it, you can find it at your local automotive paint dealer

I used a blob of seam sealer on mine. Has worked great so far.

Interesting. You can see the factory spot welds on mine. On all the short hoods I have and the long hood on the '6. I do have the sealer on the long hood but you can see the spot weld marks on the support.
