My oilpan has a slow drip at the drainplug. I've tightened it as much as I feel comfortable but no love there. Is there a sealant I can use that won't casue further problems or should I look for a new plug?

I seem to remember Dad talking about shoe lace to fix that problem. Wrap one wrap of shoelace around the plug tighten, it makes a seal.

Check the plug gasket. Looks like a washer. Most likely missing, damaged, distorted, etc. While the plug is out check the area where the plug gasket seals against the pan and make sure it's smooth (no burrs) and in decent shape or not cracked.

Use teflon tape on threads is a help.

I pulled the plug. It has the metal washer/gasket but it;s seen better days. It needs to be replaced. Are they available or can I use a neoprene gasket?

You can get copper washers at some hardware and auto parts stores. Or you could cut one out of the appropriate gasket material I would guess.

I think it would seal, but I'd worry about it coming out on its own. With the copper gasket, you can tighten the plug a lot more.

I think Napa carries an assortment of copper washers for this purpose.

I use the nylon ones. they can be used many times. Copper usually is a one time usage.
