Brake Pressure Switches

    I've got a pile of questions for everyone today but am seperating them by application to hopefully make it easier for others to search later? If that's wrong and it's better to lump them all together on one thread please let me know. My next question is the brake pressure switches and their locations as you can see on the picture below my front switch is sitting right on top of the frame exactly where my new power steering bracket needs to sit. What's also odd to me is that my porportioning valve is just kind of hanging in front of the master cylinder which also seems out of place. The rear pressure switch is sitting inside the frame rails behind the MC and seems ok? Any ideas or better yet pictures of how and where you guys are locating yours would be most appreciated. Sorry for the bad pictures I was lazy and used my cell phone oh and I almost forgot this is in a 1970 CJ5.

    The brake line junction block (not a proportioning valve) was apparently moved for that steering shaft. It used to be bolted to the frame directly outboard of its current location.
    Part of the 'fun' with upgrades like steering improvement is figuring out where all the stock stuff has to go. You will probably need to get a good tubing bender and some brake line. Learning how to fabricate your own lines will be a good skill to have acquired.
    I'm curious as to why you selected the reverse steering box arrangement over the standard forward arrangement like later model CJs.

    Thanks for clarifying the junction block versus the proportioning valve. I guess I will have to look for a place either in front of my soon to be power steering gear box or behind the master cylinder? The junction block does not worry me as much as the pressure switches they are so tall especially with the wire coming out of the top. Is there a lower profile switch out?

    I guess the main reason I went with Herms reverse kit was it seemed simple and safe. There were a ton of positive posts on the forum and it was really easy to find parts from donor vehicles. Now you have me curious why you are inquiring? It's not to late to change directions if you have some useful information you wouldn't mind sharing with me.

    My 71's brake block & front pressure switch is basically in the same locaction as yours. Just as dnb5853 stated, a tube bender & I would add a hand Vacuum pump, and brake flaring tool kit as well.

    I'm not sure about a low profile switch. I'm swapping in hanging pedals soon, so I won't be using that hyd/elec switch.
    I recently upgraded my steering equipment too. There's much personal preference involved. I followed the general layout of later model CJs, only because my frame was already modified accordingly.

    Regarding asking questions.

    You get better answers by splitting them into separate threads. Less confusion happens that way.

    you only need one switch, the stock one (end of mastercylinder) is a little hard to access maybe your frame top switch is a replacement for ease of access good luck.

    As to the steering mod - nothing wrong with Herms setup. I've seen a couple of them now and it seems to work fine. As to me - I have been doing the Saginaw swaps for so long, I can do them in a weekend if I have all the parts on hand (and I know what I need, so that's easy too).

    Yours looks like it already has a saginaw setup in it (based on the shaft going through the motor mount).

    I had the junction block and pressure switches in the same locations as you describe on my 1970 cj5. When I converted to 11" drum brakes and dual reservoir MC I did away with the junction block and both pressure switches.

    why is there 2 switches? i will putting my lines back together shortly and i wondered if i only needed one?

    There is one pressure switch for each Reservoir in the dual Reservoir master cylinder. that way if one Reservoir front or rear goes empty, you will still have brake lights from the functioning brakes. You are out of luck if both go empty - no brake lights... no brakes either

    If you did away with both pressure switches how do you activate your brake lights?

    If I was to hazard a guess, I would suspect an electrical switch at the pedal. I have a dual master cylinder but only one switch. It is mounted to the frame beside the x-fer case.

    Put a switch on the brake peddel. Push the peddel down the switch turns on the brake lights. Release peddel the the lights go off.

    Installed a braket to hold the switch (push button type) next to the brake peddle arm. I'll take a photo tonight and post. The push button switch was $1.30 at Radio Shack

    Finally got a photo of the electric brake switch I mounted after I removed the orignial pressure switches during my change over from 10" to 11" drums.
