i purchased a set of axles quite some time ago and was told they were 4.27 gears. these are supposedly from a 71 cj5. i've heard of 4.09,4.11,4.10,4.56 but never 4.27. i haven't pulled the covers off to check the actual gear ratio. any help would be helpfull

I have a set of 4:27's that came out of a 1970 cj5 so it was a factory option. and i like them (about the perfect gearing for what i do)

4.27 was supposed to be the 'standard' ratio in the models with the F4 engine. Most I have seen had the 'optional' 5.38s in them though ;)

I have 4.27 on my 64 cj5. Does fine on the road, but I think
I would like the 5.38 better offroad. Not gona swap out though.
Most of my driving is road anyway..

FWIW and i think it has been discussed before in detail, I swapped out the trans/transfer from the 4:27 jeep to the 5:38 m38a1 and it seems to have even a lower ratio. almost a whole gear lower:shock: before with the stock a1 components 2nd gear was perfect, now 2nd is too low and 3rd seems about right in low range. this exact trans/transfer with the 4:27's in the jeep they came out of seemed matched perfect to what the a1 came with, with the 5:38's but had better road manners on road. so IMHO the 4:27's with the right tranny/transfer ratio can go either way, just depends on what you want.YMMV

If the D44 still has the tag look for 47 / 11. Otherwise if you count the ring gear will have 47 teeth and the pinion 11.

It i my understanding that '64-70 F4's run 4.27 by default. The engine was uprated and combined with the T90C
(with it's steeper first and second gears) when they put the taller gears in.

What they said. And you won't see 4.09,4.11,4.10,4.56 in an early CJ from the factory.

I'd double check the ratio before getting in a sweat. 4.27 or 5.38's were offered with the F-head and 3.73 and 4.88's with the V-6 for that year. The thing is, no telling what someone else may have swapped in. Pull the covers which will let you check condition and drain out the old fluid, and check the ratios to be sure.

I put in the 4.10's when doing the lockers. They're pretty good but I think if I did it over I would look for a set of 4.27's . . . .

hmmm.ok. these were bolted to a 71 frame with a v6. but who knows if these were the originals. right now i am running 3.73 with the factory limited slip in the rear and thinking of swapping to the 4.27 rearend. i'm running 33 inch tires and think the 4.27's will give a little more zip. not that the 3.73's are bad. would i be able to use the factory lsd and just swap gears?

I swapped from 3.73's to 4.27's. But at the same time I put an sm465 behind my v6. I'm Happy.Wish 1st.gear was syncronized, and I've gotta get that floor finished.I could run 70+mph,now 60mph is kinda pushin' it.But lo-lock 1st.gear is way worth it.
    Good Luck

When Jeeps were offered with 4.27's they lowered the 1st and 2nd gear ratios in the T-90's. I had a 64 4 cylinder CJ-6 that had such a transmission but with 5.38 gears. The transmssion felt like a four speed with 3rd gear missing. A big jump in ratio between 2nd and high.

With the 225/t-14/spicer 18,and 3.73's,I had to ride the clutch quite abit while trail riding. But the little Jeep could cruise comfortably at 65mph-70..ish.mph on the four lane. Now...225/sm465/dana 20,and 4.27's. 1st.gears a joy,but highway speeds are a comfortable 50mph.55mph.is kinda pushing it,60mph.has me praying for the v6,a little bit.I'm running the same 33" tires. I had a 4cyl.t-90/5.38's(again w/33" tires).loved the low gear, but 50mph.had it wound out.
    my '76 258/t-18/2.73's.with 29" tire.Was Great on & off road.
