A while back I was having trouble getting my Jeep to go over fortyfive miles-per-hour and, that was with overdrive. We discovered the engine had been sabotaged and I'd accrued 100K of wear in the #1 cylinder in just 350 miles on a rebuilt engine.

A lot of folks here counseled me that the Jeeps of my era and engine (F 134 in a 59 CJ5) wasn't intended to go over fortyfive miles-per-hour. I hated the cheap-o stickers with the shift pattern and shopped around for metal plates and found these brass reproductions for a CJ3B with a similar drive train. They also have the shift pattern.

I appreciated everyone's help, and offere this up as information and don't intend it to be punative in nature.

I really wouldn't want to ride in a vehicle with an 81 inch wheel base going 18 miles per hour... in reverse.

I regularly drive mine at 65 on the Interstate when I drive it to work (only for about 5 miles or so). I don't really like driving it that fast cause the wind just beats you to death, but the Jeep handles it OK.

I've often wondered how those numbers were determined, especially considering the low range values are just 1/2 the high range values. It seems that if your low range ratio is roughly 2.5:1, then the high & low range max speeds should vary by the same ratio.

I did get a haircut, but my Jeep didn't go any faster. Should I try shaving my head?

I think what speed is comfortable in a Jeep has a very lot to do with the tires, assuming the steering and brakes are up to spec. I ran Michelin 235-15 at's for several years and, though they left something to be desired off road, they were very stable at 85. The km's on the other hand, start feeling pretty squirrely at 70.

kicks in od in reverse and speeds off to the final sunset

Shaving your head will increase your CR.

I often wondered if my 3A dash data plate lied about the top speed, but then I got it up to 60 without an OD.

OK, just to avoid confusion- I'm sure everyone here knows that taking material from the cylinder head raises the compression ratio.

These guys are just joking around.:)

I agree that going sixty-five or eighty (in O.D.) in an old jeep is a dicey proposition. They're very old vehicles that have been rode hard and put up wet more times than we can count. Who knows what's hit the Jeep, what it hit, or what sort of frame warping stresses it's encounted? Mine is in the shop getting the transmission/transfer case rebuilt and the fellow doing the work was amazed at the number of parts missing, installed backwards, and out of spec, but it kept running. You've gotta love older vehicles who don't have computers to tell them they don't work.

As soon as we get her assembled we've got to chase down a shake in the front end at fifty MPH. Given my fifteen inch NDTs I'm kinda set against a damper as that's curing the symptom not the problem.

And yes, going sixty-five in an open Jeep with no roll bar may be exciting, but, who wants to live long enough to need diapers again?
