Hi guys. My Eastwood chasis kit is almost here and I need to know a good cleaner to use to wipe the frame down with before painting. Something that is good to get the grease and whatever off that might be left. I have pressure washed and wire wheeled all the loose rust off. Was thinking of using acetone or zylene. Curious what others used before applying the rust encapsulater.

Read the instructions on the rust encapsulator first. I know when I did my epoxy primer they said to stay away from xylene and used denatured alcohol as the first choice. But when I did the bedliner in the pickup, they suggested to use Xylene...go figure.

The Eastwood Chassis kit usually comes with Prep, their metal cleaner. That's what I used when I did the 3-step process.

The can I have says Acetone or their own pre-cleaner. I have used acetone for the past couple years I've been using it and haven't had any issues.

I used to use the POR-15 system before I switched to Rust Encap. I had nothing but issues with that stuff staying on anything for more than a year or two despite following directions to the tee, incl. using their rust converter and cleaner. Horrible, horrible stuff.

Thanks guys. Looks like I'll be using acetone since I forgot to order their cleaner. Did the rust encapsulator stick well even without the rust converter they show now should be used? My frame actually cleaned up with less rust than I thougt it would have. I read somewhere that the rust converter has trouble drying if there is no rust in spots so I figured I would skip it. But now with so little rust I'm wondering about the encapsulator.

personaly i wouldnt skip steps. rust encap stuff just coveres up rust. rust convertor actually converts iron oxide into something else. once your rust is converted then the encapsulator is kind of undercoating/preventative, i think. but dont take my word, i would do more research.

i have used the convertor on frames that had spots of clean metal and it seemed to dry just fine. i did like four coats of that stuff then i just painted. worked good but i think your coating may be more durable than paint.
