While aquiring a replacement bellhousing, I also aquired the motor attached to it (thanks Gemini). It is an even-fire 231, and my current project jeep has the last year odd-fire. Once I get the '66 back together, I was hoping to rebuild the spare motor with a few performance parts and either swap it into the 66, put it in the 72 or maybe just have it sitting as a work in progress in my livingroom. R)

From what I can tell from this forum, an intake/carb/cam/header combo would give me what I need. Just looking or some advise on odd/even fire part swapping, performance combinations that worked or didnt work.

Right now i am thinking comp cam & headers, with stock tweaked 2bbl.

    What do y'all think?

Pat Ganahl wrote a book called V-6 Power Secrets I think it's called. Very good read on Buick V-6's. I'd recommend it. I have it at home, just haven't looked at it for a while.
You don't say what your needs are for this motor so it's hard to give advice.

If it is an occasional trail rig and street driver and you just want a little more than stock then a good RV cam with a small 4 barrel, an Offy 360 degree intake, and headers are a good combo. Stock intake and carb with headers will do very little to nothing but make it louder. You have to get the air in before it will come out. On the other hand, a 4 barrel with stock restrictive exhaust won't do a lot either. You have make modifications that complement each other to see any gain.

Occasional trail rig / daily driver... Low budget build, if there is such a thing. I actually have not decided what to do with the motor yet. It's a spare. I bought it for core for the bellhousing, and the motor turns.

I will definately track that book down, thanks for the help nickmil.

Anyone try using the larger 2gc 2-barrel rochester on their stock intakes? There are a couple mid-60's and mid 70's models out there that have 298 & 330 cfm! Reading Pat's chapter on intakes, he recommends this for a small bolt on gain of at least 5hp.

Well, I have a 231 ef with an RV cam, mildly cleaned up heads, and headers. I run a Rochester Dualjet which is in the neigborhood of 400 cfm 2bbl. I have HEI and a 231 car flywheel (about 30#) also. It gets around real well. Right after the motor was originally built and broken in we chassis dyno'd it at 220 hp at the rear wheels.
A carb flowing 330 cfm imho would work great for your application. For the build with mild trail running and street driving as the intent, a mild RV style cam like the Comp Cam so many are running, a good flowing carb like you are suggesting, and maybe some headers would work well. One thing is you've gotta make sure the carb will bolt to the manifold you plan on using and the manifold doesn't then become the choke point for flow. Doesn't do any good to put a higher flowing carb on a restrictive intake.

200hp sounds good to me! Good advice, it gives me something to plan while laying awake in bed, miles away from my Jeep. Still have to get it put back together from the last project... This weekend... if it's sunny.
